There's a scene in Season 3, for instance, in which Catalina (Sofia Pernas), Jane's overbearing, show-offy cousin from Venezuela, calls Jane's son, Mateo, by Jane's own nickname for him—“Mr.
Jane starts to give birth and her ex-fiancé Michael gives her parents Xiomara and Rogelio a lift to the hospital and arrive just in time for Jane to give birth to a healthy baby boy. They agree to name him Mateo after Jane's deceased grandfather, with his full name being Mateo Gloriano Rogelio Solano Villanueva.

Over the course of the first season, Jane also becomes acquainted with her father, telenovela star, Rogelio De La Vega, who was previously unaware of his daughter's existence. Jane gives birth to a son whom she and Rafael name Mateo (the name of her dead grandfather).
And the ableist stereotypes are not restricted to adults. In season five Jane's son Mateo is diagnosed with ADHD and the writers used the most basic negative stereotypes. He's disruptive, even violent, hyperactive, his struggles are always completely public. It's clearly only seen as a negative.
When the promotional poster for the season was first released, it was revealed that the character of Mateo was recast with Elias Janssen due to previous child actor Joseph Sanders being too busy with school to commit to the role.
His wife has just started nursing school. One daughter is soon to be walking and the other just found out that Mateo is officially her biological son.

Character. Jane is a bright, passionate young woman, who is fulfilling her dream of becoming a published writer. She has a five-year-old son named Mateo, with her boyfriend and baby-daddy, Rafael Solano. She grew up with her very young mother and Abuela, and loves her family deeply.
During the series finale, Petra was emotional over Jane and Rafael's happy ending and feared that she'd never find love again. However, at the wedding, JR returns and reunites with Petra and the duo get back together. Petra went from a villain on Jane the Virgin to a beloved character and I loved every second of it.
Mateo worked very hard to provide for his family and, sadly, died at the young age of 43. He was three years older than Alba and would've been in his 70's now. He presumably died before Xiomara got pregnant.
Main. Gina Rodriguez as Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a 23-year-old, religious Latina virgin who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake. At the time she was dating Michael Cordero, a Miami police officer.
Spoiler: Jane and Michael finally did it, a deed the show depicted with a cartoon of them stepping into a rocket that blasted off into the stars.
Michael winds up the go-to-guy for helping men be a part of the Villanueva family unit, helping out both Rafael and Rogelio. Jane and Rafael get Mateo back. Jane invites Rafael to live at the Villanueva house for a few weeks so he can be around Mateo.
And then Mateo reveals that Liliana thinks he'd be great at voiceover work and that is when we learn that grown-up Mateo has been the Narrator all along! Creator Jennie Snyder Urman told BuzzFeed News that she always knew that Mateo was going to be the Narrator.
The overall aftermath of the relationship is the birth of their daughter, Baby Michaelina De La Vega Factor.
His doctor explains that Mateo “struggles with both inattention and impulsivity” and that his “executive functions are somewhat impaired, which is why tasks are not completed and he has trouble self-regulating. It's just harder for Mateo to focus and prioritize than other kids.”
Petra realizes she is into women, too, when she has a dream about her criminal lawyer, Jane Ramos, kissing her. After the dream, she realizes that she has feelings for JR and goes to pursue a romantic relationship with her.
After Jane learns that she is still married to Michael, she decides to get divorced from him so she can move on with Rafael. Luisa visits Rose in jail learning the reason she faked Michael's death and gave him amnesia. Rogelio has a hard time leaving Xo alone while he is filming the American version of his telenovela.
However, in the season 4 finale, Jane Ramos becomes furious and breaks up with Petra after finding out she lied about her involvement in Anežka's death to protect her daughters Anna and Ellie. They reunite after JR decides to forgive her and Petra promises to never lie to her again.
The girls were inadvertently named after the sisters from Frozen. They did meet their auntie Luisa in season 4 episode 5 when Rafael had a fight with her sister and they walked in.
Jane struggles with the decission, causing a brief rift between them but they eventually reconcile and Jane agrees to give her one of her eggs. However, Lina decides she doesn't want to put their friendship on the line and will instead ask one of her sisters.
But in a moment of strength after quitting her job at the hotel (owned by ex-boyfriend, father-of-the-baby Rafael, are you following Jane the Virgin virgins?), our heroine made the decision to keep her baby, Mateo, for herself and sue the father for sole custody.
After five seasons Jane the Virgin has come to its conclusion on the CW—and as promised, the candy-colored dramedy finally revealed who its narrator is: Jane and Rafael's son, Mateo.
Friends. Xo discovers she's pregnant from her fling with Esteban Santiago and deliberates on how to handle having an abortion, mostly concerned with how it will affect her relationships with Rogelio and Alba.
We even have Jane explaining that to Mateo, her 4-year-old son, when he asked: “Why don't some people want Bisa (a Spanish word for great grandmother) in this country?” This theme is explored in very unique and educational ways, and it's, of course, so important that it's talked about because, again, it's not something ...
