It is claimed Manuka Honey helps with reflux symptoms by “coating the stomach and oesophagus and healing the damages in the tissue and lining provoked by acid reflux”. Some people swear by having a spoon of Manuka Honey up to four times a day, 20 minutes before meals and before bed time.
A study response published by the British Medical Journal suggested that consuming five milliliters (or about one teaspoon) of plain honey a day provided relief of heartburn symptoms.
Simply take 1 tea spoon of Active Manuka Honey on a small piece of bread before the meals and before bedtime. It is important to take the Manuka Honey on something (like bread toast) to transport it to the lower part of esophagus, right between the stomach and the esophagus.
Drinks such as ginger tea, certain fruit and vegetable juices, and plant-based milks may benefit people experiencing acid reflux and heartburn. Avoiding citrus juices, carbonated beverages, and alcohol can also help to reduce symptom frequency and severity.
You may find relief from infrequent heartburn with sodium bicarbonate, otherwise known as baking soda. Simply mix ½ teaspoon with four ounces of water to help neutralize the acid.
BRAT foods
Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These foods are very easy to digest which makes them perfect for snacking before bed.
Manuka honey consumed before bedtime can help the body to release melatonin into the brain which is necessary for a deep sleep and helps to reduce the risk of more serious sleep-related health issues.
How to take manuka honey? If nothing hurts, but just want to feel better and more invigorated - in the morning, eat manuka honey on an empty stomach for 1 tsp, dissolving it in your mouth like a lollipop. Or dissolve it in warm water (½ teaspoon of honey per glass of water) and drink instead of plain water.
Although you can add it to smoothies, oatmeal or yoghurt, the best way to take Manuka Honey is straight from the jar. It is recommended to take it once in the morning and once at night. It is safe to have 2 to 4 teaspoons (10 to 20 mL) of Manuka Honey daily, but always remember to moderate how much you consume.
Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory properties and can combat digestive issues, such as an upset stomach. These properties make it an effective treatment for acid reflux. Additionally, the soothing effect of Chamomile tea helps reduce stress, which is usually a trigger for indigestion and acid reflux, and even GERD.
Foods to Eat on an Acid Reflux Diet
Noncitrus fruits: Apples, bananas, blueberries, and strawberries are safe bets.
Honey is a well-known antioxidant and helps protect cells from free radicals. These free radicals may cause acid reflux because they can harm the lining in your esophagus, resulting in inflammation. Thus, adding some honey to warm water may reduce inflammation and soothe the burning sensation.
A doctor often advises taking honey on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. That's so because it offers you an immediate energy boost that will last the entire day. Also, a tablespoon of honey before bed not only promotes restful sleep, but also aids in digestion and body and mind relaxation, says Dr Pathania.
Lemon water
Lemon juice is generally considered very acidic, but a small amount of lemon juice mixed with warm water and honey has an alkalizing effect that neutralizes stomach acid. Also, honey has natural antioxidants, which protect the health of cells.
It can lead to stomach issues
If you suffer from constipation, then honey can make it worse. And even if you don't, too much honey can block you up thanks to the high content of fructose in it. Moreover, honey can also lead to bloating and/or diarrhoea as a result of your body's inability to digest the sugars in honey.
Usually the doctors recommend honey to be taken empty stomach early in the morning as it gives an instant kick and energy boost which is enough to counter an entire day. Also, while going to bed, a spoonful of honey not only gives a good night's sleep but also helps in digestion and relaxation of mind and body.
A maximum of two teaspoons a day (15g) is a good portion size of manuka honey, as while it has many impressive health benefits, it is still high in sugar. If you are using manuka honey as part of a balanced diet, try drizzling it over porridge, overnight oats or natural yogurt.
Manuka honey has been shown to promote restful deep sleep, acting as a natural sleep aid by slowly releasing the glycogen needed for essential bodily functions during sleep. Add honey to milk before sleep to help naturally release melatonin into the brain, which is necessary for deep sleep.
Raw and unfiltered honey can hydrate your skin, soothe your throat, help heal wounds and sweeten everything it touches, but it can also help you get a sweet night's sleep. Raw honey, eaten just before bed, helps you snooze in two general ways: It provides easy-to-access fuel for your brain throughout the night.
Manuka Honey can also be added to warm or cold water, or used as a sweetener in tea or coffee. But remember NOT TO add Manuka Honey to boiling water. This will kill the active enzymes, which is the reason you bought your honey in the first place!
Stabilizing Blood Sugar
Hunger pains during the night can be disruptive. A signal goes out in your body that your blood sugar is unstable and that it's time to eat. A small amount of honey just before bed stabilizes blood sugar and prevents this reaction that can lead to increased wakefulness.
Water. Most notably, mineral water with an alkaline pH – this may reduce the acidity of the stomach and help to denature the enzyme pepsin. It's this digestive enzyme that is thought to be responsible for much of the damage associated with reflux.
Caffeine can increase stomach acid, and like alcohol, it relaxes the esophageal sphincter. Drink plenty of water. That's not just at night – drinking water all throughout the day will dilute stomach acid, and helps improve overall digestion. Sleep in loose clothing.
4) Avoid drinking in bed. Lying down with a full stomach can make it easier for the acid to travel up your esophagus, so avoid drinking hot water before sleeping.
