The Medal of the
The Order of Australia is one of the awards included in the Australian Honours. The Order of Australia has four award levels. The Companion of the Order (AC), the Officer of the Order (AO), the Member of the Order (AM) and the Medal of the Order (OAM).
Please note that within the Order of Australia, the highest award is the only post-nominal used. For example, Mr John Citizen who has received the OAM, the AM and the AC, will be addressed as Mr John Citizen AC.
Individuals are appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service in a particular locality or field of activity or to a particular group. The Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) is awarded for service worthy of particular recognition.
AO stands for Officer of the Order. If one judges, as most do, the level of the Order of Australia award by the quota per annum, this is second to top in the general (as opposed to the military) category of the order with a maximum of 140 awarded each year.
The Medal of the Order of Australia is awarded for service worthy of particular recognition. In the Australian honours system appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.
Like a CBE, an OBE is an order of the British Empire award. It is the second highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, behind CBE but ahead of MBE. It stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire (as opposed to Commander for a CBE and Member for an MBE).
Process. Anyone can nominate a member of the community for an award in the Order of Australia. Nominations are generally processed in order of receipt. All nominations are confidential and the person being nominated should not be advised of the nomination or approached for information.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award of the United States, alongside the Congressional Gold Medal.
The awards are considered by an independent body called the Council for the Order of Australia. Nominations can be made by any member of the public by submitting them online to the council. Staff at the council conduct additional research and contact referees.
A person awarded the Star of Courage is entitled to use the post‑nominal letters “SC” on all occasions when the use of such letters is customary. A person awarded the Bravery Medal is entitled to use the post‑nominal letters “BM” on all occasions when the use of such letters is customary.
However, Stanley Martin says in his book The Order of Merit 1902–2002: One Hundred Years of Matchless Honour, that the Order of Merit is the pinnacle of the British honours system.
The ranks are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCVO), Knight or Dame Commander (KCVO or DCVO), Commander (CVO), Lieutenant (LVO) and Member (MVO). Associated with the Royal Victorian Order is the Royal Victorian Medal which has three grades: gold, silver and bronze. The circular medal is attached to the ribbon of the Order.
Dame/Knight Grand Cross (GBE)
Grand Cross is the highest class in many of the Orders.
Proportion of all land that is Indigenous owned or controlled. Nationally as at June 2022, 16.1 per cent of Australia's land area was owned or controlled by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This is unchanged from the same time in the previous two years (June 2020 and 2021) (figure SE15a. 1).
The first Aboriginal winner was boxer Lionel Rose, who quipped: "One hundred and eighty-two years ago one of my mob would have been a dead cert' for this." Since then a further seven Indigenous people have been named Australian of the Year, for achievements in sport, music, politics, law, public service and academia.
No food or drink items can be taken into the AO Arena.

Appointments and awards in the Order of Australia are not made posthumously. However, a nomination will be considered if the person is alive when the nomination form is received by the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat.
CAN I USE THE TITLE SIR OR DAME IF I GET A KING'S AWARD? Only individuals who have been awarded a knighthood or damehood are entitled to use these titles with their name. If you are awarded an MBE, OBE or CBE you may use these letters after your name.
The two senior ranks of the Order of the British Empire are Knight or Dame Grand Cross, and Knight or Dame Commander. Both of these ranks entitle their members to use the title of Sir for men and Dame for women before their forename.
While a CBE, OBE and MBE are some of the top-ranking honours, only the top two ranks can use the title "Sir" or "Dame". People awarded a GBE, KBE or DBE can use these titles.
