The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1995.
The Cavalier was a favourite of King Charles I of Britain, who the breed is named after. It is reported that his son, King Charles II, was also a lover of the breed and was said to have been more concerned with breeding spaniels than ruling Britain.
For her eighteenth birthday in 1944, the then Princess Elizabeth was given Susan the corgi. All subsequent corgis bred by The Queen have been descended from Susan. As well as her love of corgis, The Queen has also bred 'dorgis' - a cross between dachshund and corgis.
