“The best eye shadow shades for gray hair are taupe, navy, brown, and plums,” says celebrity makeup artist, Nydia Figueroa. And if you're looking to add brightness, choose one with “a bone matte color or even a color that is a little brighter than your skin tone to pull the look together,” Figueroa explains.
While neutral colors may have worked well for you in the past, Brown advises that with gray hair, nude tones will leave you looking washed out. "You need pops of color, there's no question," she said. Instead, she encourages hues that fall within the rosy pink family.
'Pick a colour similar to your hair, take the little brush which comes with the eyeshadow and dab the product onto the hair. You don't need to add hairspray - it should stick to the hair shaft all day on its own.
You want to avoid shades that are too similar to your natural coloring; beiges, creams, off-whites, stone grays, taupes, etc. These colors will only wash you out and emphasize your gray tones.
If you want to see what that looks like, just pinch your cheeks and see how pretty that looks (that's the natural color you want from your blush). For the lips, pink, rose, and coral shades are perfect complements to gray hair.
Jewel Tones
Deep emeralds, rich purples, and vibrant blues can beautifully offset silver locks, adding a touch of luxury and regality to your look. These colors can be introduced through statement accessories like a silk scarf or a pair of gemstone earrings.
Root Spray
Root spray can be gently applied on your graying roots. This is a temporary root touch up that will last until you wash your hair. With a good root spray, you should be able to avoid buildup and maintain healthy hair.
And when you're ready to get rid of the color, co-wash it out or use a sulfate-free shampoo like these. Click here to read about my first time using cream eyeshadow and hair chalk on my transitioning hair for temporary color! Happy temporary coloring!
Get a gloss treatment
A hair gloss treatment is like a clear hair toner that adds shine. Hair gloss gives you longer-lasting and more vibrant color, as well as reduces split ends, frizzy hair, and dryness. Purple hair gloss treatments can also be used to balance brassy tones in your gray hair.
Stay in the pink.
Instead of trying to play down your natural gray color, highlight it with a soft lily or pink rose blush that brightens your complexion, enhances your cheekbones and harmonizes with your silver locks. Stay away from dark, bright red colors and bronzers. Both these can make you look clownish.
Eyeshadow can be used for dyeing hair temporarily. The good thing about this hair coloring method is that it washes out, and you can use it to see whether you'd like your hair to be a different color more permanently.
Baking soda is a great natural remedy for gray hair, as it helps to clarify the hair and scalp while also restoring vibrancy and shine, especially if you're struggling with hair loss. Plus, baking soda can prevent discoloration due to exposure to sunlight, extreme dryness, or other factors.
If you add the right hair colour, your 'grey' hair will act as highlights, giving you a completely new look that will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Professional colourists usually recommend a darker shade for your roots and a lighter shade that matches your natural hair for the rest.
Even if you do have cool-toned skin, don't let it stop you from experimenting with gold. Gold jewellery set against grey hair – both white-greys and dark greys – looks striking and powerful; something worthy of your status.
For a more minimalistic yet super chic makeup aesthetic, try using pink tones that will complement your white hair. Baby pink and pastel shades are especially beautiful on fair to medium complexions; whereas, fuchsia has the wow factor against deeper skin tones.
Define eyes with eyeliner
“Navy is great for women with white hair.” For people with medium-toned skin and gray or white hair, she suggests using a dark brown liner. For those with dark skin, she said black liner will help the eyes stand out.
Warm browns and navy are friends to grey hair; they're much less harsh than black. Eyeliner on the top of your eyes and a few swipes of mascara can make eyes look wider.
When stored correctly (in a cool and dry place), eyeshadows will last at least 2 years. Always check your eyeshadows for any signs of expiration. If you notice a change in smell, texture, lack of pigmentation, or if your shadows have started to harden, it is time to throw them away.
Yes, you can put eyeshadow under your eyes without looking like a raccoon. Lining your lower lashes with shadow can create softer definition than you'd get with a typical liner. Harsh lines underneath those pretty peepers can actually make them appear smaller, so shadow makes the perfect alternative.
