You can take MOVICOL® at any time of day that is convenient.
This medicine can be taken at any time with or without food. Dissolve the content of each sachet in 125ml (1/4 pint) of water and drink.
MOVICOL usually takes 1 to 2 days to trigger the first bowel movement.
Do not take Movicol if your doctor has told you that you have: an obstruction in your intestine (gut) a perforated gut wall. severe inflammatory bowel disease, like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or toxic megacolon.
Stop taking Movicol and consult your doctor if you begin to feel weak, fatigued, breathless, very thirsty with a headache, or get swollen ankles. These symptoms may indicate that your fluid and electrolyte levels are disturbed and your doctor may need to take a blood test to check for this.
Stimulant laxatives are usually taken on an empty stomach for rapid effect. Results are slowed if taken with food. Many stimulant laxatives (but not castor oil) are often taken at bedtime to produce results the next morning (although some may require 24 hours or more).
General Recommendations when taking Laxatives Drink plenty of water. Increase fibre in the diet, except in cases of medication-induced constipation. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence. In some circumstances, prolonged use may be necessary but should only be under medical supervision.

As with all laxatives, prolonged use is not usually recommended, except under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Use in children aged 2 years and older should be limited to 12 weeks, except under medical supervision.
Like all medicines, Movicol Lemon- Lime can have side effects. Sometimes people have indigestion, stomach ache or rumbles. You may also feel bloated, suffer from wind, feel sick or vomit, may also experience soreness of the anus (bottom) and may have mild diarrhoea when starting to take Movicol Lemon-Lime.
About macrogol Brand names: Movicol, Laxido, CosmoCol, Molaxole. Macrogol (or macrogols) is a laxative taken to treat constipation (difficulty pooing). You can also use it to help clear a build-up of hard poo in your bowel, which can happen if you've been constipated for a long time (faecal impaction).
Because of the gentle, natural mode of action, it can take a day or so after starting MOVICOL before you have your first bowel movement. But it will be a predictable and comfortable one, in harmony with the way your body works.
Usually people find that Movicol takes effect around one to two days after taking it. The duration of the treatment for constipation may continue for up to two weeks.
The unusually slow passage of waste through the large intestine leads to chronic problems, such as constipation and uncontrollable soiling. There is no cure.
Most people are able to have regular bowel movements within a few weeks. Some people will need to use laxatives along with bowel retraining. Your health care provider can tell you if you need to take laxatives and which ones are safe for you.

The main active ingredient, macrogol 3350, goes straight to the bowel where, by retaining a set amount of water, it softens, expands and lubricates the stool to trigger peristalsis - in the same way as your normal bowel movement. MOVICOL® does not ferment either, which means less likelihood of gas or bloating/wind.
Movicol powder
If your child does not drink enough water with it, the medicine will not work properly and your child may become dehydrated. Open the sachet and pour the contents into the water. Stir well until all the powder has dissolved and the mixture is clear or slightly hazy.
Adult sachets are for people from age 12 upwards and should be mixed with at least 125mls water PER SACHET. Empty the sachet of powder into a cup, glass, or bottle. Add the right amount of cold water and stir until the powder has dissolved and the water is clear.
In some circumstances, prolonged use may be necessary but should only be under medical supervision. If you take too much Movicol Flavour Free and get bad diarrhoea, stop taking Movicol Flavour Free until the diarrhoea stops. If constipation returns, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist.
