Butterflies will eat a variety of fruit. We like to feed them bananas, apples, and pears. We poke each piece of fruit many times to make it nice and juicy and give space for butterflies to stick their proboscises. Butterflies do not always eat for their own nourishment.
If you would like to open your own butterfly diner for a couple of weeks, butterflies love very ripe fruit such as oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, apples, and bananas.
' Provide sliced overripe fruit like oranges, bananas, berries, pineapple, melon, pears and plums. Katy adds, 'Mashed banana works really well. You can also try mixing banana with a little bit of water to make a paste - it allows them to feed a little easier using their tongue-like mouthpart, called a proboscis.
A forever favorite, lavender is prized for intensely fragrant purple-blue blooms that can be cut and displayed in floral arrangements or dried to use in teas, spice mixes or potpourris. Pollinators such as butterflies and bees can't resist lavender's intoxicating lure.
Sometimes rotten bananas and other fruits are placed inside the box to lure butterflies inside. The boxes are normally erected in or near flower gardens a few feet above the ground. Some proponents even go so far as to recommend that butterfly boxes be placed facing the south.
Good plants for butterflies include: Hardenbergia violacea, Goodenia species, Buddleija, verbena, salvias, native grasses, daisies, herbs and 'weedy' plants such as nettles.
When they first emerge your butterflies won't eat for the first few hours. They need time to "fuse" their proboscis together in order to be able to eat! If you leave some slices of fruit (Apple, watermelon, orange) in the habitat they should start eating soon!
They sleep under leaves to hide from predators. However, butterflies with warning colours may be less hidden whilst they sleep to deter predators. During this time, the butterfly's body will enter a low metabolic state and will become inactive.

A lot of folks may not be aware of this, but monarchs, like all insects, can get stressed, just like humans and other vertebrates can. And importantly, one of the hallmarks of stress in all critters in the animal kingdom is an increase in heart rate.
Somewhat less appealing, they can also get these nutrients from rotten fruit or vegetables, faeces, urine, sweat, tears and (the least attractive of all) rotting carcasses!
For a butterfly that seems weak or hungry, you can rescue it by helping it eat. Mix up some sugar water and set out a sponge soaked in it. Gently take the butterfly's wings between your thumb and forefinger, using utmost care not to pinch too hard. Set the butterfly on the sponge.

To make, heavy gauge copper wire is twisted into a hook shape and wound around a tree branch. Attach several in a row, spacing them about 6 inches apart. Snag large chunks of fruit on each hook. Bananas, oranges, papayas, and mangoes work particularly well.
Larval foodplants
The larvae of the Monarch feed on a number of introduced foodplants, for example Araujia sericifera (cruel plant), Asclepias curassavica (red-head cotton- bush), Gomphocarpus fruticosus (swan plant), G. cancellatus (broad-leaved cotton-bush) and Orbea variegata (carrion flower).
The Allium family includes edibles like onions, garlic, shallots and leeks, so most species have a scent that will repel deer, rodents and other garden pests. And at the same time, Alliums are attracting bees and butterflies for better garden pollination.
The monarch butterflies' host plant, which it relies upon for food and protection in the caterpillar stages, is a milkweed, a group of plants which exudes a milky, latex-like poison when its external skins are penetrated.
