Coily hair is the driest hair type, thus it is more prone to breakage and requires a gentle touch. On the surface, coily hair may seem robust, but it is actually the most fragile of all hair textures because coily hair contains the fewest cuticle layers to protect from dryness.
Thick (Coarse)
Thick or coarse hair texture is the strongest hair texture and typically feels coarse or thick to the touch. Coarse hair contains all three hair layers – the cortex, cuticle and medulla.
Fine Type 4 natural hair is incredibly fragile and promotes breakage, so it needs more TLC to reduce friction between the strands and retain as much length as possible.
The only difference is its tightness and non-defined pattern. Coily strands are tightly wound around each other, making the hair susceptible to snap or break without care. It's not surprising that many hair experts deem the 4c hair type as the most fragile in the hair typing system.
Type 4C hair is deemed to be the most challenging hair type to maintain because it is naturally dry, has little definition, can be difficult to style and requires daily maintenance. At KinkyCurlyYaki, we love natural curls regardless of the challenge of the hair type.
A general observation across experiments was that straight hair was perceived as younger, healthier, and more attractive than wavy hair and darker shades (medium copper and brown) were perceived more positively than blonde hair.
According to the survey, the majority of men (42%) found blonde hair to be the most attractive. This was followed by brunette (36%), red (16%), black (5%), and gray (1%).
Type 4 hair is the kinkiest hair type there is. When you think of afros, you're likely thinking of type 4 hair. Made up of a crazy amount of super tight curls, this hair type is the densest of all curl patterns. It's also more prone to shrinkage than Type 2 or Type 3 hair and may be much longer than it appears to be.
Type 1A - This hair type is extremely soft, smooth and shiny. While this hair may feel like a dream for many, it lacks volume. Type 1B - slightly thicker and bouncier than 1A. Type 1C - Most coarse and thick straight hair.
Coily Curls
The last, but most rare type of curl is the coily curl. This curl type is similar to that of an afro and when observed carefully, looks like the angular letter 'Z'. These curls require the most amount of moisture, as the hair type is much thicker than the other curl types.
Wet hair is far weaker than dry hair, being more susceptible to breakage and damage from just about anything – heat and pulling on the hair strands are more likely to damage wet hair than dry. Hair is made up largely of a number of proteins called keratins.
Type 2C hair waves start from the scalp and are thicker than other Type 2 hair types. This coarse hair type is the frizziest and forms a clearly defined “S” shape.
Type 1 hair is hair that lies flat, or straight. Straight locks tend to be on the shinier side because the hair's natural oils are able to travel from root to tip. This hair category includes divisions 1A, 1B, and 1C. Type 1A is “stick” straight hair that has no hint of curl or wave.
Brunette was clearly the hair color perceived as most attractive, with blonde as the second most attractive, and red as the least attractive. Figure 1 summarizes these results.
The rarest natural hair colour is red, which makes up only one to two percent of the global population. You commonly see these hair colours in western and northern areas of Europe, especially Scotland and Ireland. However, natural redheads may not exist for much longer.
Blonde is Crowned the Sexiest Hair Colour of 2021!
The second sexiest hair colour is brunette, as more than three quarters of people (28.5%) voted this shade.
Hair type 1A is super-straight. It doesn't even hold a curl! 1A is the rarest hair type.
Caucasian hair usually appears thicker since it is more difficult to see through the scalp than other ethnic hair types. However, Asian hair is the thickest and coarsest hair of any ethnic group.
All about 4d Hair Type
4d hair curls are also extreme, and at the time, you may think the person has short hair only to find its shoulder-length or even longer. The curl pattern for this hair type at times is defined as a Z pattern. 4d hair is mostly coiled and has a spring-like pattern.
Type 3: Curly Hair
This category encompasses hair that curls into springs and corkscrew shapes. When hair is wet, curls usually look like waves but take on a three-dimensional swirl shape as they dry. Each strand of this hair type can be unique.
So if you've tried every curly butter, cream or soufflé going, and have yet to see a single curl pop, don't declare your 4C hair undefinable just yet. Like growing it long, curl definition is a possibility on all kinds of curly hair.
