After Alina harnesses the firebird power, she enlists Heartrender Nina (Danielle Galligan) to help heal Mal, who's, you know, dead. This means he's beyond healing, so Alina uses the unpredictable and powerful form of magic known as merzost to resurrect her love.
At the end of the story, Alina plans to lead the Grisha with the help of Zoya (Sujaya Dasgupta) and Genya (Daisy Head) and continue her political alliance with Nikolai. Meanwhile, Mal takes a detour by returning to the True Sea as the new Sturmhond, meaning he can return at any time as well.
In the books, Alina and Mal go into the Fold, but the Darkling finds them and they don't have a chance to execute their plan. Mal tells Alina to stab him. And she does, but unlike in the show, he's not already dying when she does so. However, instead of the power surging into her, she loses her powers.
Between the novels Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, on which season 2 is largely based, Alina loses her Sun Summoner powers completely for a time after a fight with Kirigan. She also ends up gaining a piece of the Darkling's power and vice versa.
Alina, who's also affected, manages to use her powers to stop the Fjerdan. But, instead of summoning light, it's clear her powers have been corrupted by merzost as she summons shadows. Rather than seeming fearful, she smiles at the revelation – and the season ends. Video Player is loading.
Did he have true feelings for Alina? Yes.
He feels the loneliness of immortality, causing him to fixate on Alina because she had the capacity to be like him. However, he is also shown to truly care for and wants to be loved by his people (the Grisha) and his nation, claiming that all he ever wanted was to create a safe place for people like him.
In the end, Mal is magically healed and the Fold is destroyed, while Alina loses her powers and fakes her own death. She and Mal eventually marry and rebuild the Grisha orphanage. While Alina Starkov is not in the King of Scars, she appears in the second book of the King of Scars duology, Rule of Wolves.
Unfortunately, the production this season lacked care or focus, focusing more on squeezing in as many winks to Grishaverse mythology as possible than making a good show. The mashed up storylines made barely any sense. The characters I loved seemed like pale shadows of themselves. The wire fights are ludicrously bad.
As she continues to hone her unparalleled abilities, Alina will only grow stronger and eventually tear down the Fold, thus making her the most powerful Grisha.
Mal leaves to take on the role of privateer as the new Sturmhond and Alina is left to fend for herself once again as Nikolai's future wife.
Shadow and Bone
It is revealed that Alina had been subconsciously suppressing her power when she was tested as a child in Keramzin for signs of Grisha ability. It was as though she knew that if she was found to be a Grisha, she would be taken away from her best friend, Mal.
Mal was oblivious to Alina's love from before book one even began. He slept with Zoya and countless others before he realised who was waiting by his back door.
During the Shadow Fold crossing, volcra attack the sandskiff, but Alina lets out a burst of light killing the volcra in order to save Malyen. Better known as the Sun Summoner, Alina is the protagonist of the series. As one of the most powerful Grisha, she is the only one capable of saving Ravka from the Fold.
In the book, however, Alina uses merzost through her still-active connection to the Darkling in order to create her own nichevo'ya (shadow monsters like the Darkling uses) to fight back against him at the end of the second novel. As a result of her using the power that one time her hair turns permanently white.
While they manage early on to find and kill the ice dragon Rusalye, aka the sea whip, it takes them until the end of the season to realize that the final amplifier, the firebird, is actually Mal.
General Kirigan / The Darkling
The villain of Shadow and Bone seasons one and two is the Darkling, the former commander of the Second Army. He is a Shadow Summoner, and the creator of the Shadow Fold. He was born centuries ago and his mom is Baghra (see below).
Ivan is a gay character from Shadow and Bone.
Four months after Alina Starkov discovers she's pregnant, the father of her unborn child finds her hiding place.
The night before the big battle, Alina and Mal finally have sex and it's Alina's first time and they're worried about not making it through the next day and I am just so sick of seeing this. This sort of thing pops up in so many fantasy novels that it just annoys me now.
Her sister's revival transformed her into the third amplifier, a trait that was hereditary. Baghra suspects Mal is a direct descendant of her sister and this is confirmed when the crypt opens in response to his blood. Mal is a Morozova: the third amplifier: the firebird.
As a result of her battle with the Darkling, Alina's hair has turned white and she is weak from being away from sunlight and her powers for so long. However, Mal and the other Grisha form a plan that gets Alina back into contact with sunlight and restores her strength.
Ulla is a half-sildroher songcaster and the half-sister of The Darkling via their late mother, Baghra. She is also known as Sankta Ursula of the Waves.
While searching for the last amplifier, Mal and Alina find out the truth about Mal's heritage. He is descended from Baghra's sister, making him a great-nephew of the Darkling.
