Salazar Slytherin (fl. c. 993) was a pure-blood wizard, noted for his cunning and determination. He was regarded as one of the greatest wizards of the age, regarded for his abilities as a Parselmouth and as a skilled Legilimens.
Despite being the original Slytherin, Salazar is still not the most powerful, as he ultimately failed in his greatest ambition. He failed to make Hogwarts a place for pure-blood students who all exhibited cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition.
Salazar Slytherin
Tom Riddle may have been the Heir of Slytherin, but it seems like a safe bet to assume that the Dark Lord probably couldn't defeat Salazar. Not only is the ancient Slytherin essentially the source of Voldemort's magic, but his intellect and cunning would likely run circles around Voldy.
Slytherin was one of the Four Founders of Hogwarts, and thus must have been a very powerful and accomplished wizard. While it is uncertain if he was the first wizard to be able to speak to snakes, it is certain that he not only had that ability but was able to pass it down to his descendants.
Godrick Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts, and the owner of the legendary Sword of Gryffindor, was absolutely more powerful than Dumbledore— and it's a good thing he was, too, because Dumbledore wasn't around in Hogwarts' early days to keep Godrick's fellow founder Salazar Slytherin in check.

Slytherin house has some trouble with shaking its murky reputation – and it's all thanks to a certain few witches and wizards like Lucius Malfoy. Today we look at the reasons why he embodied all the worst Slytherin traits and gave his house a bad name… Lucius Malfoy was an odious character.
Voldemort intentionally made six Horcruxes, but when he used Avada Kedavra on Harry, he unintentionally created a seventh Horcrux. Instead of dying, Lily's love for Harry created a counter 'curse' known as Sacrificial Protection and saved Harry.
Slytherin disliked taking students from Muggle families, seeing them as untrustworthy and unworthy of being taught magic, and tried to persuade the other founders to only take students from pure-blood families. However, the other founders didn't agree with Slytherin, particularly Godric Gryffindor.
Hufflepuff has produced the least amount of Dark wizards
'They didn't want to show off, they weren't being reckless, that's the essence of Hufflepuff. ' In fact, the most evil deed we can remember a Hufflepuff ever doing was Ernie Macmillan wearing a 'Potter Stinks' badge.
While teaching at Hogwarts, Salazar and Helga Hufflepuff fell in love, however Salazar's rivalry with Godric Gryffindor brought stress upon their relationship.
Merlin himself was sorted into Slytherin when he was at Hogwarts, and the young wizard went on to become one of the most famous wizards in history. The Order of Merlin, named to commemorate him, has been awarded since the fifteenth century.
Moaning Myrtle
Born in the late 1920s to Muggle parents, Myrtle Warren started her Hogwarts life in the early 1940s, where she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She had no friends, and was bullied relentlessly because of her glasses and acne. But she would soon have all of eternity to get her own back.
Although there are strengths to every house, Hufflepuff house in particular often comes up short. While the other houses seem cool and invite a certain allure, Hufflepuff is a little different. Often considered the least desirable of all the sorting options, here are some reasons why Hufflepuff house is the worst.
Slytherins have a fear of failure since their cunning mentalities encourage them to be perfect at all times. Repeated failures are what people of the house are really afraid of, though, because it opens up the possibility for them to consider that they might be weak in some way.
Peter Pettigrew. Peter Pettigrew, (a.k.a. Wormtail), is the only Death Eater known to have been in a House other than Slytherin (Gryffindor) while at Hogwarts.
Peter Pettigrew represents the worst Gryffindor in the entire Harry Potter series. Wormtail, as he was known among his friends, was thought to be a friend of the Marauders and a member of the Order of the Phoenix, but he was secretly working for Voldemort and committed the ultimate act of betrayal in the series.
Neither of them is Slytherin's heir. Although, as Dumbledore says, Harry's ability to speak Parseltongue is a skill accidentally transferred by Slytherin's actual heir, Voldemort, when he tried to kill Harry as a baby. So perhaps this is one myth with a bit of truth to it.
