Though Hagrid's wand was snapped and he was expelled, he was trained as gamekeeper of Hogwarts and allowed to live on the school grounds at the request of Albus Dumbledore. In 1991, Hagrid was given the task of reintroducing Harry Potter to the wizarding world.
After Harry proves that it was Tom Riddle (as Lord Voldemort was originally known) who actually released the monster (to kill muggle-born and half blood wizards), Hagrid is released from Azkaban Prison and returns to the school.

Riddle ultimately changed his name, by way of an anagram, from "Tom Marvolo Riddle" to "I am Lord Voldemort", as a way of removing his own heritage and of exalting himself, and he killed the Riddle family, partly because they were Muggles, and partly because they abandoned him and his mother.
Hagrid was expelled in his third year after he was accused by Tom Riddle of opening the Chamber of Secrets, which led to the death of Moaning Myrtle. Born in the late 1920s to Muggle parents, Myrtle Warren started her Hogwarts life in the early 1940s, where she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She had no friends, and was bullied relentlessly because of her glasses and acne.
However, since he never graduated, Hagrid's magic was never flawless; so even though he was able to use the pink umbrella as a wand substitute, he did not have the skill required for complex feats of magic.

Hagrid was loyal
Dumbledore has kept Hagrid working and living at Hogwarts ever since he was expelled from the school after being set up by Voldemort, which makes Hagrid grateful and loyal to Dumbledore.
When asked about what form Hagrid's Patronus takes, Rowling replied that Hagrid actually can't produce a Patronus because “it's a very difficult spell.”
In the movie, we don't see Hagrid until he's being held captive by Voldemort's Death Eaters in the Forbidden Forest. In the book, Hagrid, Grawp (his giant half-brother), and Fang (Hagrid's dog) show up at the castle to fight before Harry finds the diadem.
