Recently, we've had some patients ask us if it's possible to brush teeth for too long. The answer to this question is “yes.” Overbrushing can wear down your teeth's enamel and damage and/or push back your gums. This can expose the sensitive root area and lead to dental issues such as cavities and periodontal disease.
Brushing regularly is considered vital for healthy teeth and gums, but dental experts warn that you can overdo it. Known as “toothbrush abrasion,” overbrushing can lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums. Vigorous brushing can wear down the enamel on your teeth and damage your gums, exposing the sensitive root area.
Although this is not always a bad thing, when you start brushing too much or for too long, you can ultimately damage your teeth. Brushing more than three times a day, and for longer than 2 minutes, can sometimes lead to your tooth enamel wearing down as well as cause damage to your gums.
Brushing your teeth too often or too vigorously can wear down the enamel of the teeth. Overbrushing causes the gums to recede, which can make them more susceptible to disease. The enamel is the protective layer of your teeth, so wearing it down can make your teeth more sensitive and susceptible to damage.
If you brush after every meal and also in the morning and night, that's five to six times a day. But brushing after a meal means teeth are being worn down when acid levels are at their highest. Wait an hour after each meal to brush to help avoid damaging your tooth enamel.
While a yellow hue near the gum line can be an early sign of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems—it is usually an indication of dental plaque or tartar. Dental plaque develops due to bacteria in the mouth combined with food byproducts and proteins.
While over-brushing can be a very real issue, it has more to do with your brushing technique rather than the number of times you brush per day. Brushing three times a day is perfectly fine as long as you brush gently and carefully, avoiding the issues mentioned above!
The reality is that not brushing your teeth before bed is bad news. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your beautiful smile twice a day. Skip a session, and you're on your way to encouraging the growth of bacterial buildup in the form of plaque, which can lead to cavities and even gum disease.

According to research, to remove as much plaque as possible more is better – with the best results at three to four minutes.
The Australian Dental Association recommends brushing two times per day, for 2 minutes each time. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth every day. It can make the teeth 'feel fuzzy' when they have not been brushed. Brushing removes the buildup of plaque and bacteria.
Use Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda
Using this mixture removes bacteria and buildup of plaque to get rid of surface stains. Create a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda paste and use it to brush your teeth. After that, use water to rinse the mouth. You can also create a mouthwash using equal amounts of each ingredient.
A few signs of overbrushing include: Splayed bristles. Bleeding gums. Red gums or bleeding gums after brushing.
We recommend that most patients brush their teeth for about 3 minutes at a time. This is usually enough time to remove all of the remove plaque and keep the teeth and gums healthy.

When you don't floss, plaque builds up between your teeth and gums. This can cause gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Gingivitis causes your gums to become red, swollen, irritated, and easily bleed when you brush.

One week without brushing:
As soon as a week goes by, your teeth' enamel will start to break down. The plaque that hasn't been removed will make it easy for bad breath to grow. A dirty tooth will make it hard to clean. You will have a greater chance of getting cavities if you don't brush your teeth for a week.
It is important to brush for the full two minutes so that you can be sure you have removed any food and plaque that has built up on your teeth since your last brushing. The bacteria in plaque feed on the sugars found in our food, so removing both food and plaque is imperative for preventing tartar buildup.
Often a cavity will look like a dark spot on the tooth, typically yellow, brown, or black in color. Early on, it may resemble tooth staining or a slight discoloration. As cavities progress, the holes get bigger and usually darker. A little dot can ultimately consume almost the entire tooth.
When the enamel is eroded so badly, in its thinnest form your inner layer can be seen, dentin. Dentin has a natural yellow color. So, if your enamel is transparent enough to show your dentin, your teeth look yellow even if you brush them every day.
Brushing your teeth in the shower exposes your teeth to more bacteria than brushing at the sink. Because your bath is rarely dry, especially if you share a bathroom with roommates, it's a constant breeding ground for bacteria and germs. This makes it a less-than-ideal place to brush your teeth.
