One lasting effect of breastfeeding is that your nipples might look droopy, or settle lower than they were before, after you stop breastfeeding. While you may not be entirely pleased with your new look, remember: You birthed and fed a baby! Your body is pretty cool, regardless of how it's changed.
You can expect your nipples to return to their original size and color (likely lighter and smaller than when you were breastfeeding) and extra veins should disappear, says Kasper.
Your nipple should be round after feeding. If your nipple is slanted like a tube of new lipstick or has a white line across it, the latch is not quite right. Run your tongue along the roof of your mouth from the front to the back.
They may also grow as your breasts expand with pregnancy weight gain. However, your areolae should get smaller again after your body stops producing milk or as your breasts get smaller.
Many women find these bumps decrease and their nipples lighten a little in color after they stop breastfeeding. Any cracks or bleeding associated with breastfeeding will completely go away. Like all changes related to having a baby, it's easier to accept a 'new normal' than to try to 'get your body back'.
Fortunately, within a few months postpartum, most nipples return to their original appearance.
Once your little one has weaned, your nipples and breasts may return to their previous size, and your body will absorb the remaining milk. Body weight is another factor that influences whether your breasts will return to their pre-breastfeeding size.
It is common to experience sagging, drooping or a "deflated" appearance. Some women describe their breasts as "pancake-shaped." This happens because lactation creates a different, denser tissue in the breasts. Once you are no longer breastfeeding, your natural breast tissues may permanently shift.
After breastfeeding, both the fatty tissue and connective tissue in your breasts may shift. Your breasts may or may not return to their pre-breastfeeding size or shape. Some women's breasts stay large, and others shrink.
The truth is that breastfeeding doesn't affect breast shape or volume. Instead, the ligaments that support a woman's breasts stretch as breasts get heavier during pregnancy. After pregnancy, even if a woman doesn't breastfeed, this stretching of the ligaments might contribute to sagging breasts.
The latch is comfortable and pain free. Your baby's chest and stomach rest against your body, so that baby's head is straight, not turned to the side. Your baby's chin touches your breast. Your baby's mouth opens wide around your breast, not just the nipple.
When you finish weaning from breastfeeding, your milk ducts are no longer filling with milk. This may lead to a smaller volume of breast tissue. Sometimes your skin will tighten to suit your new breast size, but sometimes there isn't enough elasticity for it to do so.
Because of the hormonal changes that may occur when weaning breastfeeding (whether it's suddenly or a slow wean), your body may experience headaches, weaning depression/anxiety, nausea, acne, insomnia, night sweats…. And really anything else involved with hormone changes.
Pregnancy: According to Mayo Clinic, during pregnancy, the ligaments that support a woman's breast might stretch as it gets fuller and heavier. This stretching is often one of the common causes of breast sagging post-pregnancy.
They have ligaments and connective tissue. When the gravity pulls the breasts down, those ligaments and the skin can stretch, and so the breast then droops. This depends on the elasticity of your skin and of your ligaments, as determined by your genes and diet, and also on normal aging processes.
Dr. Blake says wearing a bra doesn't prevent your breasts from sagging and not wearing one doesn't cause your breasts to sag. “Wearing a bra doesn't affect the risk of breast sagging, or what is called 'breast ptosis,'” she says. It also won't impact the shape of your breasts.
If You Don't Breastfeed
You should expect your breasts to decrease in size within a week or two, as your milk dries up. Other changes, like darkened nipples and veins, may take a few weeks or longer to decrease.
Signs of a Poor Breastfeeding Latch
Your child is sucking in their cheeks as they try to breastfeed. Your baby does not have their lips out like a fish. You can see that they have their lips tucked in and under, instead. You can hear a clicking or smacking noises as your little one tries to suck.
A “click” indicates that your baby is breaking the seal on the breast. This causes your nipple to slip in your baby's mouth and often creates a sore nipple. If you are hearing clicking, try improving the latch by bringing your baby's chin deeply onto your breast.
A baby will unlatch naturally when she's finished breastfeeding. You shouldn't ever have to take your baby off your breast. Whether she falls asleep or just pulls away, she'll know when to unlatch when she's ready.
A newborn should be put to the breast at least every 2 to 3 hours and nurse for 10 to 15 minutes on each side. But rather than worry about duration, it's important to know that the best way to ensure that the baby is getting enough breast milk is by feeding frequency, wet and dirty diapers, and weight gain.
Always burp your baby when feeding time is over. To help prevent the milk from coming back up, keep your baby upright after feeding for 10 to 15 minutes, or longer if your baby spits up or has GERD.
