If you have had some weight loss, you may find your stoma reduces in size also. If you are unable to measure your own stoma, contact your Stoma Care Nurse and they can help you measure your stoma and make sure your appliance is fitting correctly.
Weight gain can lead to a higher hernia and parastomal hernia risk. It can also cause dips and rivets around the stoma site and the stoma can also increase in size and possibly protrude more and be more noticeable.
Changes to the size and shape of an established stoma can also occur over time. Most commonly, these changes result from weight gain. In general, weight gain of ten pounds (4.5 kilograms) or more can cause a stoma to “pull-in” and to become more flush with the surrounding skin.
For the first six to eight weeks, your stoma will most likely shrink in size. Regular measuring will help ensure you are wearing the correct size of pouching system, increasing your confidence, and reducing discomfort.

A person who has had an ileostomy and wants to lose weight could consider eating low fat products, such as low fat dairy and lean proteins, and steamed or boiled fruits and vegetables, which should be peeled and deseeded. With a doctor's approval, a person can also exercise after having an ileostomy.
A stoma (parastomal) hernia is a weakness or protrusion in the muscle wall of the abdomen which allows the abdominal contents to bulge out. The bulge often protrudes more when coughing or undertaking physical activity. A stoma hernia is one of the most common complications following stoma creation.
The stomatal openings remain closed at night as photosynthesis is not conducted without sunlight. They are closed to prevent water loss via the stomatal pores. The gaseous exchange required at night doesn't occur via stomatal openings and is conducted by diffusion.

The Colostomy Surgery Procedure
