Pasta, rice, noodles, couscous, and breads – these are all much lower in potassium than potato. Suitable breakfast cereals include rice or corn based cereals, wheat biscuits, Shredded Wheat®, Special K®
How much potassium is in an egg? One large egg contains about 63 mg of potassium. 11 Eggs are considered a low-potassium food but check with your doctor or dietitian to find out how often you should eat them.
Lower in potassium
Plain cereals such as cornflakes, porridge, Shredded Wheat, Weetabix. Cakes and biscuits: plain, jam or cream filled e.g. Madeira, Battenberg, doughnuts, tarts, plain scones, digestives, wafers.
Eat regular meals and include a small portion of starchy foods at each meal. Choose slowly absorbed starchy food, such as porridge, pitta bread, pasta or basmati rice.
Avoid black-eyed peas, dried beans, cooked greens, spinach, yams, and sweet potato pie. All are high in potassium.
Water pills (diuretics) help rid your body of extra potassium. They work by making your kidney create more urine. Potassium is normally removed through urine. Potassium binders often come in the form of a powder.
Most meats add some potassium to your meals. Chicken breast has the most per 3-ounce serving with 332 milligrams, but beef and turkey breast contain 315 and 212 milligrams, respectively.
Potassium in cheese is typically low. One exception is when potassium chloride is added to some of the low-sodium cheese options, such as low-sodium cheddar or Colby cheese.

White breads tend to be lower in potassium than whole grain breads, so it can be tempting for people with kidney disease to choose white bread. However, in our research, we were unable to find any white breads that were considered low in sodium and contained no phosphorus additives, so we do not recommend white bread.
Low potassium vegetables include cilantro, alfalfa sprouts, lettuce, arugula, kale, Napa cabbage, leeks, spaghetti squash, sweet onions, eggplant, and more.
Eat foods that don't have as much potassium. These low-potassium foods include: Fruits such as apples and applesauce, pineapple, grapes, cherries, strawberries, watermelon, honeydew melon, blueberries, and raspberries. Cucumbers, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, peas, squash, and zucchini.
Potatoes are very high in potassium. Avoid baked potatoes or potatoes cooked in a microwave because all of the potassium stays inside the potatoes. Avoid scalloped and instant mashed potatoes as well as French fries. Peeling, cutting and soaking potatoes in water overnight leaches out some of the potassium.
Include lean meats such as salmon and other fish, chicken, and turkey—each provide over 400 milligrams of potassium for every 3-ounce portion. While it is important to consume foods rich in potassium, be aware of hidden sources of sodium in canned vegetables and legumes.
