In the body, lymphatic vessels drain tissues of interstitial fluid (ISF), which contains waste products such as cellular debris and toxic molecules. The ISF forms a protein-rich fluid called lymph that circulates through the lymphatic system back to the circulating blood1.
In a healthy body, the lymphatic channels from the liver and mesentery drain toward the thoracic duct, which is the main lymphatic vessel responsible for lymph drainage. In most people, the thoracic duct drains into the subclavian vein on the left side.
Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the drainage of lymph nodes and movement of lymph fluids around the body. It can help relieve lymphedema. The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from body tissues.
A lymphatic drainage treatment (otherwise known as lymphatic massage) can help with fat burning as well as overall health. Lymphatic drainage therapy can help increase lymph flow, help the body shed excess weight, and offer a fresher look with less clogged pores and less puffy skin.
While you can always come and see us for a lymphatic drainage massage even if you're not exhibiting any specific symptoms, several signs indicate you may need one: You have congestion or fullness in your ears. You suffer from headaches. You feel fatigued or run down.
Avoid diuretics (“water pills”), alcohol and caffeine.
They both could dilate the lymph tissue and cause more swelling, and as a result, exacerbate the lymphedema.
Possible Complications
In addition to swelling, the most common complications include: Chronic wounds and ulcers. Skin breakdown. Cancer of the lymph tissue (rare)
Lymphoedema occurs when the system does not work properly because of a mechanical problem. The fluid cannot drain, so it causes swelling in the tissues. Lymphoedema most commonly occurs in the arms or legs, but it can also be seen in the chest, genital area, head or neck.
The lymph fluid carries the waste products and destroyed bacteria back into the bloodstream. The liver or kidneys then remove these from the blood. The body passes them out with other body waste, through bowel movements (poo) or urine (pee).
Water intake and the balance of electrolytes in the body are critical for healthy cell function. Drinking fresh water throughout the day—at least half your body weight in ounces per day—is a simple practice that consistently flushes out the lymph system, preventing stagnation and the accumulation of toxins.
Magnesium is a really freaking important mineral that is responsible for everything from blood pressure regulation to your heart rhythm. It's also touted as an anti-inflammatory, and can help reduce some of the symptoms associated with an overworked lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system requires water to flow properly. After all, lymph fluid is primarily composed of water and must be hydrated to function and flow. Drinking at least 1 litre of warm lemon water in the morning is a great way to get the lymphatic system moving to help expel toxins.
Physical activity encourages fluid to drain into the lymphatic system in the abdomen. Walking, swimming, yoga, pilates and Tai chi all might help to encourage the lymph to move. Pelvic floor exercises may also help.
