The Big 'A' - Stands for 'Adults Only', which obviously prohibits anybody under the age of 18 to watch the film in theatres. The Big 'S' - Stands for 'Restricted to special classes', which means only a certain members of the society, such as doctors, scientists, etc, are permitted to watch the film.
TV Parental Guidelines may have one or more letters added to the basic rating to let parents know when a show may contain violence, sex, adult language, or suggestive dialogue. D – suggestive dialogue (usually means talks about sex) L – coarse or crude language. S – sexual situations. V – violence.
Founded by Holly Tarquini in 2014, the F-Rating is used like a Fair trade stamp to give film lovers an easily identifiable label so they can choose films that fairly represent women on screen and behind the camera. The F-Rating is applied to all films which are directed by women and/or written by women.
Intended for adults and may be unsuitable for children under 17. Possibly contains crude indecent language, explicit sexual activity or graphic violence.
Films and computer games classified M (Mature) contain content of a moderate impact. M-rated films and computer games are not recommended for children under the age of 15. They include portrayals of elements such as violence and themes that require a mature outlook.
R – Restricted
Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.
Titles rated T (Teen) have content that may be suitable for ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language.
K+: Some content may not be suitable for young children, usually those below nine years of age. There may be minor violence without serious injury, mild suggestive material, or minor coarse language that is justified by context. Equivalent to PG.
'B' ratings indicate that material default risk is present, but a limited margin of safety remains. Financial commitments are currently being met; however, capacity for continued payment is vulnerable to deterioration in the business and economic environment.
A B movie or B film is a low-budget commercial motion picture.
This rating means the film contains adult material such as adult activity, harsh language, intense graphic violence, drug abuse and nudity.
An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the board, contains some adult material. The film may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously.
R: RESTRICTED. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
R21 (restricted 21) – Strictly for adults aged 21 and above. Films under this category are restricted to be screened in licensed venues only.
Programming rated TV-Y in the United States by the TV Parental Guidelines signifies content that's suitable for all children, but especially recommended for young children aged 6 and under. Shows on channels like Disney Junior, Nick Jr., Cartoonito and PBS Kids usually receive this rating.
R is merely the second extreme rating for television, whereas TV-MA is the most extreme. TV-MA is worse than R because it contains both R and NC-17-rated material. R is OK for viewers under 17 as long as they're accompanied by an adult, but TV-MA is never appropriate for viewers under 18.
Not recommended for under 15 without Parental Guidance. A PG rating means Parental Guidance under 15. You may need to take care with these films and games, and maybe explain some of the content to your kids.
R 18+ restricted
R 18+ films are legally restricted. R 18+ films are not suitable for people aged under 18 and people screening R 18+ content must not allow those aged under 18 to view the content.
M is given to films and games that can be shown to anyone but are more suitable for mature audiences. This is most often done under the cross-rating system.
Fanfiction is fair use as long as the work is “transformative,” meaning that the new author added content with new meaning and value to the original work.
Mature (M): Suitable for those aged 18+. Contains strong disturbing, violent and/or sexual content and often includes constant strong language. Explicit (E): Only suitable for adults. Suitable only for those aged 21+.
18A – 18 Accompaniment – Persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Additionally, admittance restricted to people 14 years of age or older in the Maritimes and Manitoba. R – Restricted – Admittance restricted to people 18 years of age or older.
The R rating means that children under 17 years are not admitted to the theater without a parent. Movies may get an R rating for different reasons. This rating is given for nudity, profanity, or violence. Nudity, depending on the context, may be harmless.
