Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), previously known as venoocclusive disease (VOD), is a rare life-threatening condition seen most commonly after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
SOS is derived from the Latin language which means “Si Opus Sit.” In medical terms, SOS has different meanings such as if required, as needed, Save our Subluxation, Stent or Surgery, Surgery on Site, Signs of Stress, etc. It is usually used while writing prescriptions.
The letter sequence SOS (pronounced S-O-S) is used in Morse code as a distress signal—a way to call for help during an emergency, such as on a ship.
