If you want to get pregnant and you have regular periods, the best time to have sex is the day before you ovulate. You also have a good chance of conceiving in the five days leading up to as well as on the actual day of ovulation. Basically, the more often you have sex during this window, the better.
You're most fertile at the time of ovulation (when an egg is released from your ovaries), which usually occurs 12 to 14 days before your next period starts. This is the time of the month when you're most likely to get pregnant.
Male Fertility Facts
Peak male fertility is around 25-29 years old. Sperm quality begins to decline at 30.
Continue counting each day of your cycle until your next cycle starts. On days 1-7, you're not considered to be fertile and can have unprotected sex, though you may have menstrual bleeding on those days. On days 8-19, you're considered to be fertile. Avoid unprotected sex or abstain from sex to avoid pregnancy.
A woman is most fertile during ovulation. For a woman with 28 to 30 days menstrual cycle, ovulation takes place during the 10th to the 14th day. But there are still chances to of getting pregnant till the 21st day. So days 1 to 7 and 14 days before your periods are considered to be safe days.
Sperm motility
Whereas sperm quality is at the best levels between ages 30-35, motility is best before age 25. And as with semen quality, motility declines dramatically after age 55.
A trained expert checks your sperm count, their shape, movement, and other characteristics. In general, if you have a higher number of normal-shaped sperm, it means you have higher fertility. But there are plenty of exceptions to this. A lot of guys with low sperm counts or abnormal semen are still fertile.
your cervical mucus – you may notice wetter, clearer and more slippery mucus around the time of ovulation. your body temperature – there's a small rise in body temperature after ovulation takes place, which you may be able to detect with a thermometer.
Have sex regularly. The highest pregnancy rates occur in couples who have sex every day or every other day. Have sex near the time of ovulation. If having sex every day isn't possible — or enjoyable — have sex every 2 to 3 days a week starting soon after the end of your period.
For fertilization to occur, sperm must reach the egg within a specific timeframe. Sperm can survive for up to 72 hours after ejaculation, but the egg can survive for no more than 24 hours after ovulation. If sperm reach the fallopian tube too early, they risk dying before the egg shows up.
Your most fertile day, and the day you are most likely to ovulate on, is the last day of egg-white cervical mucus. You can also track your ovulation hormone using at-home ovulation tests (sometimes called an ovulation predictor kit, or OPK).
At least 11 million moving sperm are needed in the vagina to achieve a pregnancy even though only one victorious sperm is normally allowed the privilege of fertilizing the egg that was made receptive by the hormonal machinations leading up to and including ovulation.
Samples collected between the hours of 5am and 7.30am were found to display a statistically higher sperm concentration, total sperm count and a greater percentage of normally shaped sperm, when compared with samples that were collected later in the day.
Male fertility generally starts to reduce around age 40 to 45 years when sperm quality decreases.
It takes just one sperm to fertilize a woman's egg. Keep in mind, though, for each sperm that reaches the egg, there are millions that don't. On average, each time men ejaculate they release nearly 100 million sperm.
Scientists discovered that there was pretty much no difference in the odds of getting pregnant between the group that got up and moved around and the one that went on short bed rest.
Conception (when the egg is fertilized by the sperm) can take place as soon as three minutes after sex or it may take up to five days. Implantation (when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall) occurs five to 10 days after fertilization—which means it can happen anywhere from five to 15 days after you had sex.
Pregnancy can happen if any semen gets in your vagina or on your vulva. So the best way to make the pull out method effective is to use it with another type of birth control (like the ring, pill, or condoms). This way, if there's a slip up, you're still protected.
You can boost your chances of fertilization by tracking your cycle and having sex as close to ovulation as possible. In fact, one study, published in the Fertility and Sterility journal in 2019, found that women were most likely to get pregnant (41%) by having sex the day before they ovulated.
Confirming whether sperm has gone inside your body can be done by checking for semen, using a home pregnancy test, visiting a doctor, getting a sperm analysis, or using a fertility tracking method. If you are concerned about whether sperm has gone inside your body, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider.
