The birds will readily eat whole wheat, whole oats or whole barley (but they can have difficulty eating whole corn). After about three weeks of eating whole grain, the hens' gizzards will increase in muscle mass and will grind the grain as efficiently as a hammer mill.
The physical form in which wheat is fed is important. Finely ground wheat becomes sticky when wet, sticks to the beaks of chickens and can cause beak impaction, (mouth ulcers) which may reduce feed consumption. Oats are a good grain for growing chickens where rapid growth is not critical, such as egg-type pullets.
Good choices include leafy greens, cooked beans, corn, non-sugary cereals and grains, berries, apples and most other fruits and vegetables. Despite often voracious appetites and a willingness to eat just about anything you might give them, there are some foods to be avoided.
They eat grains, fruits, vegetables and insects. Chickens should typically be fed a prepared feed that is balanced for vitamins, minerals and protein. A healthy laying hen diet should also contain crushed oyster shell for egg production and grit for digestion. A 6-pound hen will eat roughly 3 pounds of feed each week.
The truth is that you don't have to feed chickens grain, and they will be healthier birds if you don't. Chickens raised in this manner don't need drugs or vaccinations to remain disease-free. Imagine organic meat and eggs that are safer, and cheaper to produce.
If you overfeed your chickens, it could cause obesity, which can then lead to a range of health problems such as mobility issues, pressure sores, and becoming egg bound. To prevent these health conditions — some of which can be fatal — it's important to feed your backyard chickens the right type and amount of feed.
Feeding Chickens Corn
Much like scratch grains, provide corn in moderation. Chickens that consume too much corn can become obese. Obesity in chickens leads to health complications; for example, heart attack and a reduction in egg production.
The commercial diet for chickens is comprised of different grains, often concentrated on higher protein content for rapid growth. An average broiler chicken diet is composed of 42.8% corn and 26.4% soybeans for protein, and about 14% bakery meal.
Leafy vegetation can also pose a danger. Tomatoes, peppers and potatoes are members of the nightshade family, so their leaves are toxic to many animals. Raw, green potatoes can carry this toxin in their skins, so while the flesh is safe, chickens shouldn't be fed peelings.
Rich in antioxidants, fibre and potassium, as well as vitamins C, K and B9, it turns out that tomatoes can be one of the most nutritious sources of food for your flock to peck at. When it comes to their food, chickens aren't picky animals, so they'll equally enjoy cooked tomatoes as much as they do raw tomatoes.

However, there is a simple figure to provide you with a solid starting point: 1/4 of a pound per fully grown chicken per day. This means each chicken will eat approximately 1.5 pounds of feed in a week. This amount will vary based on the age and size of your birds.
Oats are Beneficial to Laying Hens

Chickens are busy sleeping at night, and they will not wake up to lay an egg, but gather the strength and energy they need to lay the egg first thing in the morning. With an average production cycle of 26 hours, you can see that your hen will not lay at the exact same time from one day to the next.
Garlic and onions are the two most common culprits that may impact egg flavor. A few other foods should be avoided because they contain toxins that can make birds ill or even be fatal. Avocado pits and skins are toxic to chickens as they contain a toxin called persin.
Can chickens eat banana peels? Yes, they are technically edible, but they probably won't touch them without some preparation. The peels are very fibrous in nature and chickens don't have teeth. They can only tear at food and likely won't be very successful with an entire peel.
Can chickens eat bananas? Absolutely! Bananas are an eggcellent source of nutrition for your girls! Extremely high in vitamins A, C and B6, they also contain magnesium, iron, niacin, as well as other essential trace elements.
Chickens should never be fed a scratch mix as their main feed for many reasons, but the most important reason is that scratch mix encourages selective eating. Because chickens can see all of the different grains and ingredients, they will automatically eat their favourite things first.
Your chickens should have a constant supply of food throughout the day. Chickens will eat when they need it and should go to bed with a full crop as they need lots of food to produce eggs. A fully grown chicken will typically eat about 120 grams of layers pellets a day.
Chickens should never be fed only, or even mostly, cracked corn because: Cracked corn does not contain the right proportions of the nutrients that chickens need. Cracked corn is low in protein, which is a key nutrient for laying hens.
