Cyclobenzaprine, one of the drugs used to treat MP, is taken as a pill. It is a muscle relaxant, particularly used to improve quality of sleep and to reduce pain. It suppresses muscle spasms ‐ and so may prevent pain caused by MP ‐ without interfering with muscle function.
Medications used for myofascial pain syndrome include: Pain relievers. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may help some people. Or your doctor may prescribe stronger pain relievers.
Myofascial pain is aggravated by use of the affected muscle and frequently responds to mechanical stressors such as stretching, pressure, anxiety, cold, or heat. It is occasionally associated with paresthesias. In many cases, it is preceded by acute or repetitive muscle trauma.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome
The pain is typically associated with trigger points in muscles. These trigger points radiate pain to the affected area when pressure is applied to them — and sometimes spontaneously with no pressure. Sometimes this pain can be in what seems to be an unrelated part of the body.
Succinylcholine. Succinylcholine is the only depolarizing muscle relaxant.
Succinylcholine is fast-acting and lasts for only a few minutes, which is very desirable in this setting.
It is not possible to cure myofascial pain syndrome, but with proper treatment, painful flare-ups can be reduced in intensity and duration. Your doctor will probably recommend physical therapy, painkilling injections, or acupuncture. But it's also important to learn how to treat your myofascial pain at home.
Acute MPS frequently resolves spontaneously or after simple treatments. However, chronic MPS are usually worse in prognosis, and the symptoms can last for 6 months or longer.
Vitamin B12 and folic acid inadequacy are more strongly related to chronic myofascial pain syndromes (MPS) than others. Insufficient vitamin B12 and folic acid reduces blood cell production. Blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles and plays a role in energy metabolism.
Benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, as well as other agents, such as methocarbamol and tizanidine as well as other spasmolytics are used to reduce pain due to muscle spasms. These drugs are centrally-acting. This action is of benefit when treating low back pain or myofascial pain syndrome.
Supplementation with magnesium citrate has been shown to reduce the intensity of fibromyalgia symptoms. [48] Magnesium supplements can be calming for some patients, so it can be useful to take them before bed. A dose of 400-800 milligrams of supplement is often recommended.
It is important to distinguish between myofascial pain and neuropathic pain. While myofascial pain originates at the muscle, neuropathic pain results from an injury to or malfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system [10].
Metaxalone. Metaxalone is a muscle relaxant suitable for sprains, strains, and other muscle-based pain.
There are no over-the-counter (OTC) muscle relaxants in the United States. But some OTC medications can help muscle issues (like soreness), such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and acetaminophen.
Pancuronium - 180 minutes or longer. Vecuronium - 30 to 40 minutes.
Carisoprodol (Soma). Carisoprodol relaxes muscles and eases pain and stiffness caused by acute bone and muscle problems, often caused by an injury.
