The Mediterranean Sea region — the largest of the semi-enclosed European seas — is surrounded by 22 countries, which together share a coastline of 46 000 km.
The largest of Europe's seas is the Mediterranean. As so evident in its name, which comes from the Latin for 'middle of the land', it is almost entirely surrounded by land. Its southern coast is formed by Africa; its northern coast by Europe; and the west by Anatolia and the Levant.
The Caspian Sea lies in Eastern Europe, at the border between Europe and Central Asia. As the largest inland body of water on Earth, it has been vital to the economy of the surrounding regions. The Caspian sea was formed 30 million years ago, around the same time as the Black Sea and the Aral sea.
The Mediterranean Sea - With an area of 2.5 million sq. km, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest seas in the world that is bordered by the continents of Europe in the north, Africa in the south, and Asia in the east.
The Mediterranean Sea has an average depth of 1,500 m (4,900 ft) and the deepest recorded point is 5,109 m (16,762 ft) ±1 m (3 ft) in the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea.
The regional seas around Europe are the Baltic Sea, the Barents Sea, the Black Sea, the Iceland Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the North-east Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the White Sea.
The Three Seas is an initiative of unity
Every year it brings together 12 countries located between the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic seas – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.
Europe's boundaries are primarily maritime. The continent is bound by the Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. The Baltic is entirely within Europe. Each of these is subdivided into smaller seas and straits.
Europe is surrounded by water on three sides i.e., the Barents Sea in the north, Atlantic Ocean to the west and Mediterranean Sea to the south.
The Mediterranean Sea has very limited tides due to the fact that is is mostly landlocked. The small amount of tides in the Mediterranean Sea is caused by its connection to the Atlantic Ocean. The tides of the Mediterranean Sea come from the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar.
Variously classed as an enormous lake or the smallest full-fledged sea, the Caspian is the largest landlocked water body in the world, with a surface area of 371 000 square kilometres. It is bordered by Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran.
The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Europe and Africa to the east, and North and South America to the west.
Norway has the third longest coastline in the world - and the longest in Europe - at 58,133 km/ 36,122 miles adjoining the North Sea, the North Atlantic (also known as Norwegian Sea) and the Barents Sea.
In Medieval European literature, the phrase referred to the North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black, Red, and Arabian seas.
The Mediterranean Sea in Europe has very high salinity – 38 ppt or more. It is almost closed from the main ocean, and there is more evaporation than there is rain or extra freshwater added from rivers.

The sea regions covered in this report are: the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov, Caspian Sea, White Sea, Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, Baltic Sea, North Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. The EU's coastal regions' size is 1 772 768 km2. The EU coastal regions are occupied by 199 million citizens resulting in an average population density of 100 inhabitants per km2 compared to 108 over the 22 EU countries with a sea coast.
One. There is only one such sea - the Mediterranean Sea, which touches Europe, Asia and Africa.
Some geographers point to the Age of Discovery and suggest that the seven seas represent the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Geography. The Tasman Sea is 2,250 km (1,400 mi) wide and has an area of 2,300,000 km2 (890,000 sq mi). The maximum depth of the sea is 5,943 m (19,498 ft).
The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans. It spans an area of approximately 14,060,000 km2 (5,430,000 sq mi) and is known as one of the coldest of oceans.
The Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean, is the deepest location on Earth.
