20/500 to 20/1000, this is considered profound visual impairment or profound low vision. Less than 20/1000, this is considered near-total visual impairment or near-total low vision. No light perception, this is considered total visual impairment, or total blindness.
If your number is between -0.25 and -2.00, you have mild nearsightedness. If your number is between -2.25 and -5.00, you have moderate nearsightedness. If your number is lower than -5.00, you have high nearsightedness.
Low vision and visual impairment
The term Low Vision is defined as “limited vision” or “Sees Less”. A person with a visual acuity in the better eye is less than 30% or . 0.3 after correction. The definition of visually impaired may take into consideration a variety of eye disorders and diseases.
Eye prescriptions change slowly over time. While there's no "bad" eye prescription, you can be "legally blind" when your prescription is 20/200 or worse.
A -5 eye and a -7 eye are not much differently at risk, but both are significantly more at risk of retinal problems than a more normal, non-myopic eye. These are rare, though, so no cause for alarm.
In North America and most of Europe, legal blindness is defined as visual acuity (vision) of 20/200 (6/60) or less in the better eye with best correction possible.
First: What does it mean to be "legally blind?" In most states, if you have distance visual acuity less than 20/200 that is not correctable with glasses/contact lenses, you are legally considered to be "severely visually handicapped" (which used to be called "legally blind").
If you're legally blind, your vision is 20/200 or less in your better eye or your field of vision is less than 20 degrees. That means if an object is 200 feet away, you have to stand 20 feet from it in order to see it clearly. But a person with normal vision can stand 200 feet away and see that object perfectly.
You are legally blind when your visual acuity drops below 20/200 even with best possible correction or if you have a visual field less than 20 degrees.
Most health institutions and government agencies agree that if the vision in your best eye is 20/200 with correction, then you are legally blind.
Decimal: The visual acuity can be expressed in decimal or percentage for example 0.8 (80%), 1.0 (100%), or 1.2 (120%). In this system, 1.0 or 100% means the average vision, 2.0 or 200 % is the highest possible value and indicates very sharp, way above-average vision.

Most people have a mild prescription, between 0.5 to 0.75 D. They may not really notice it in their daily lives. People with a measurement of more than . 75 D may need contacts or eyeglasses to correct their vision to see clearly.
If your prescription is -2.5 or lower, this means that you are legally blind. Visual acuity of -2.5 is equivalent to 20/200 vision. Visual acuity of -3.0, for instance, means that you have 20/250 or 20/300 vision.
The Numbers
On a glasses prescription, 0.00 (zero focusing power needed) represents good vision. Generally, the further away from zero you go (whether the number is positive or negative), the worse your eyesight and the greater the need for vision correction.
A person is considered legally blind if they cannot see at six metres what someone with normal vision can see at 60 metres or if their field of vision is less than 20 degrees in diameter.
This is the basis for the “legal blindness definition. Legal blindness is defined as: 20/200 or worse vision in the better seeing eye, or less than 20° of a field of vision.
A person who cannot see at six metres what a normally-sighted person can see at 60 metres or has a field of vision restricted to 20 degrees diameter or less (normal field of vision is 180 degrees) or a combination of both (reduced visual acuity and field of vision) is considered legally blind.
Simply put, if your prescription is -2.5 or lower, this means that you are legally blind. Visual acuity of -2.5 is equivalent to 20/200 vision.
-3.00 diopters or less is mild. -3.00 to -6.00 diopters is moderate. -6.00 to -9.00 diopters is severe. -9.00 diopters or more is extreme.
A lens Rx for -14 Diopters tells us you have a very, very high degree of nearsightedness (myopia). This would be considered in the "severe" range. Of all the people who are myopic, less than 2% are worse than -10 Diopters.
The line below the big E is the line for 20/100. There are also tests that can measure in between 20/200 and 20/100. Someone who cannot view the line for 20/100 but sees somewhere between 20/100 and 20/200 would still meet the government's standard of legal blindness, which is why it is listed as "20/200 or less."
The maximum negative eye power is typically around -20 diopters.
A refractive error greater than -6 is when an optometrist might diagnose high myopia in a patient. Low myopia can have a refractive error as low as -0.25, while moderate myopia caps out at -5.75. If left untreated and with age, high myopia can progressively worsen to a greater degree of refractive error.
How can you improve your vision to 20/20? In 2020 the American Optometric Association declared it was the “Year of the Eye Exam.” The simple answer is that eyeglasses, contact lenses or laser eye surgery can correct your vision to 20/20.
