Yoon Min-sik. SEOUL – The sex ratio at birth for South Korea in 2022 was 104.7 boys to every 100 girls, Statistics Korea data showed Wednesday, the closest Korea has ever been to gender parity among newborns since the government started keeping tally in 1990.

A sex ratio of 100 means there are equal numbers of females and males. Qatar has the highest sex ratio, with three males per woman, followed by the United Arab Emirates, having 222 men per 100 women. Third-ranked Oman, too, has almost two males per woman.
As of 2020, there were around 100.1 men for every 100 women in South Korea. The sex ratio is projected to fall to 99.6 by 2070. In terms of gender equality, South Korea has struggled to achieve economic and political equality.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) collects data on marital status in 34 developed countries. Of those, the biggest country of bachelors and bachelorettes is Denmark, where 24 percent of the population age 20 and older is single and living alone.
Worldwide, the male population is slightly higher than the female population, although this varies by country. As of 2021, the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, under the control of China, has the highest share of women worldwide with 54.2 percent. Curacao followed directly with 54 percent.
New York City has more than 200,000 more single women than men; Atlanta 95,000 more; Washington, D.C. 63,000 more; Philadelphia nearly 60,000 more. The pattern continues for Baltimore and Miami. Meanwhile, the opposite is true out West, where the absolute numbers favor heterosexual single women.
In 1960, Korean women had, on average, six children. In 2022, the average Korean woman could expect to have just 0.78 children in her lifetime. In Seoul, the average is 0.59. If this downward drift continues, it will not be long before one out of every two women in the capital never becomes a parent.
Korean beauty standards prioritize having a small v-shaped face, fair skin, symmetrical eyebrows, a slim body, and double eyelids. Altogether, these features create a more innocent, young look.
In 2021, the average height of South Korean women in their twenties as well as those in thirties lay at 161.77 centimeters. Women in older age categories tended to be shorter.

In 2020-21, the fertility rate was 1.66 babies per woman, similar to the rate recorded in 2018-19. In 2019-20, the rate had fallen to 1.61 babies per woman.
