An extremely rare 1930 Australian penny has sold for $60,000 at auction, breaking an Australian record. The coin went under the hammer over the weekend and was bought by a Western Australian bidder.
“Now the sets are being valued at $6,000. “It's purely down for people's attraction to the $2 Mars coin. To see its value increase nearly 30 fold in five years is beyond ridiculous.”
'It's purely down for people's attraction to the $2 Mars coin. To see its value increase nearly 30-fold in five years is beyond ridiculous,' Mr Kandiah said.
These coins are high-mintage items. The HH on them does not make them a rarity and between them, nearly 200 million examples were produced between 1988 and 1989. It is amazing that people still think these coins are valuable and this is the result of some articles that have been published that are absolute nonsense.
Which Australian One Dollar Coins Are Valuable? Australia's rarest one dollar coin is the 2000 $1/10c mule - this is the one to look for! A few years ago, a mint condition example sold at auction for more than $10,000.
Australia, 1968 One Cent -
With the lowest mintage of all circulation one cent pieces, the coin was never available in a mint set (the Royal Australian Mint did not issue a mint set in 1968) making them today very difficult to hunt down in Mint State or UNC.
The 1966 wavy baseline 20c is still the most sought after rare Australian 20c coin.
The most sought-after in the collection is currently the Northern Ireland version, followed by Scotland and then England. There are around 485,000 of the Commonwealth Games coin sporting the Northern Ireland flag in circulation today, and this sought-after coin has sold for around £35 on eBay in recent months.
The 2012 Red Poppy, 2013 Coronation and 2014 Green Dove coins also have value due to the fact that they were the earliest coins released. This means that as collectors have come along and started collecting coloured $2 coins, they have been forced to buy the harder-to-find ones.
“The 2013 Purple Coronation $2 coin has a mintage of 995,000 and in the last week its value has shot up to $75 to $180. “The coin collecting market is absolutely crazy right now!” Kandiah said it's hard to know how much the coins' values will rise to, but says he says it's likely to keep growing.
A list of valuable 50c Australian coins is fairly short - most are only worth their face value unless they are in premium grade. One of the first 50 cent piece designs that many people notice in their change are the fifty cent coins struck for the Centenary of Federation - there is one for each state and territory.
The 1966 one cent made by the Royal Mint Perth branch is probably the most valuable 1 cent coin from Australia, while the 1966 Royal Mint Melbourne branch 1 cent is also popular with collectors when in mint condition. The 1968 one cent coin is another one to look for in mint condition.
Anyway, back onto the circulation issues. Truly uncirculated 50 cent coins from 1969 (cv $25), 1971 ($25), 1972 ($55), 1973 ($60), 1974 ($35), 1985 ($13), 1993 ($22) , and 1997 ($30) are all worth more than any commemorative 50c coin.
Due to the low mintage, the 1972 five cent coin is very sought after (even in used condition) and can be worth over $100 in mint condition. Another scarce Australian five cent coin is the 2016 Decimal Currency commemorative - it has an easily-identifiable design on the tails side.
1792 Birch Cent - About $2.6 Million
One of these is the famous Birch Cent of 1792, named after engraver Robert Birch. This penny is worth the most of all examples ever made. The coin was a "large cent," about the size of a quarter, and there are only 10 known examples.
A new $2 coin commemorating the end of the Vietnam War has skyrocketed in value and is now selling for up to $1,200 online. The Royal Australian Mint released two $2 coins earlier this month to commemorate 50 years since the end of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.
Did you know there's a one dollar coin in circulation that could be worth anything from several hundred to several thousand dollars? The coin is called a "mule" and it's just one of the hidden treasures that could be in your change right now!
Although the 2014 $1 WWI Centenary Unc will be issued for circulation, this is an irresistible opportunity to keep your collection complete in strictly Uncirculated condition. Better yet, this key type can be yours at a mere A$6.95 apiece!
The 1985 10c coin, with a mintage of 2 million, and the 2011 10c issue, with a mintage of 1.7 million, are the two gems. Besides those, there are, of course, the mint set only dates of 1986, 1987, 1995, and 1996.
It only appeared on coins made in 1988 and 1989 and was the initials of engraved Horst Hahne. How much are they worth? Well, $2. Apparently about 200 million of these coins were minted with 'HH' 😳
The $2 coin is made of 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel. It is circular in shape, and has an interrupted milled edge.
