REZUM THERAPY. Rezūm therapy is a new minimally invasive treatment for benign prostate enlargement. Rezūm therapy uses the thermal energy from water vapour to ablate prostate tissue, resulting in a reduction in the size of the prostate.
Rezūm Therapy for BPH
The Rezum treatment for BPH, or an enlarged prostate, is the first of its kind. Using water vapor therapy, this minimally invasive procedure has shown to significantly reduce the symptoms of BPH.
Washington, IN (March 7, 2023) – Daviess Community Hospital Urology clinic is now using the iTind procedure to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate. The iTind received FDA de Novo classification as a novel device for the minimally invasive treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in February 2020.
To get the full benefit of Rezum can take as long as 6 months. When should I stop my prostate medication? It is sensible to stop the medication 4 weeks after the procedure. If the prostate is very large then this may be extended to up to 3 months.
The method for treating an enlarged prostate is minimally invasive. It is performed by going up through the urethra and using an instrument that turns water into steam. The steam delivery lasts only seconds. The procedure is designed to be done in a doctor's office.
Drink tea. Both green tea and hibiscus tea are among the top drinks for prostate health. Both types of tea contain potent antioxidants.
Rezūm is recommended for men with a prostate volume of ≥ 30cm3 and ≤80cm3. Rezūm can also be recommended to men with chronic medical conditions, and of advanced age, as an alternative to other more invasive BPH surgeries. Rezūm is not recommended for patients with a urinary implant or who have a penile prosthesis.

5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitors
In some men, finasteride can relieve BPH symptoms, increase urinary flow rate and shrink the prostate, though it must be used indefinitely to prevent recurrence of symptoms, and it may take as long as six months to achieve maximum benefits.

Sometimes the reason may be simply inadequate treatment but other times symptoms may be caused by a different problem such as the overactive bladder, bladder stones, bladder cancer, or urethral stricture.
Most patients report mild discomfort during treatment but no pain. No incisions are needed. During the treatment, a physician inserts a small needle into the urethra and positions it within the prostate gland. In nine seconds, the needle produces a 2-centimeter-wide steam ball that shrinks surrounding prostate tissue.

Pros Rezum Procedure
Many BPH treatments can impact ejaculation and Rezum prevents ejaculation issues in 97% of cases. Rezum doesn't require general anesthesia and is considered a top alternative to surgery or medications. Rezum therapy preserves sexual and urinary functions, showing results in two weeks.
Rezum is not covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance, so Rezum is a self funded procedure.
At New York Urology Specialists, we advise our patients to refrain from sexual activity for 2 weeks after the procedure or catheter removal to allow the tissue to heal. A small amount of blood in semen or ejaculate can be present for up to 3 months after the REZUM procedure.
Catheterization as a Part of Rezūm Therapy
“For Rezūm Therapy patients, a catheter is usually left in post-procedure because patients will likely have an inflammatory response to the procedure and swelling may make it difficult or impossible for them to urinate,” said Dr. Bilal Chughtai.
