The 1925 penny is Australia's 2nd rarest penny and is one of the most sought after coins in the entire penny set. Royal Mint records seem to indicate that it was struck quite late in 1925, mainly to make sure there was no chance that Australian shop tills ran short of pennies over the 1925 Christmas break.
A new $2 coin commemorating the end of the Vietnam War has skyrocketed in value and is now selling for up to $1,200 online. The Royal Australian Mint released two $2 coins earlier this month to commemorate 50 years since the end of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.
The set was originally sold for $170 - however in recent days, the sets have been valued at as much as $6,000. Kandiah says it's the demand for the $2 Mars coin is driving the huge spike in price for the collection.
“The 2012 red poppy currently has a value of $180,” Joel said. “Due to its high value, people have been trying to make imitations and sell them on the market.” Showing a fake version of the “rare” coin, Joel pointed out the unusual feature of the red poppy.
Which Australian One Dollar Coins Are Valuable? Australia's rarest one dollar coin is the 2000 $1/10c mule - this is the one to look for! A few years ago, a mint condition example sold at auction for more than $10,000.
We get many calls a week from people asking if the $2 coloured coins they've found in their change or worth money. The answer from us is most often, “no”.
The 1977 Coat of Arms 50c is the rare one. They were not meant to be minted but 10 of them have appeared.
"The 2012 Red Poppy has a small mintage of 503,000 and because of that, they're selling for between $150 and $370." With a slightly higher mintage of 995,000, the value of the 2013 Purple Coronation $2 coin has has shot up to $75 to $180. "The coin collecting market is absolutely crazy right now," Mr Kandiah said.
A list of valuable 50c Australian coins is fairly short - most are only worth their face value unless they are in premium grade. One of the first 50 cent piece designs that many people notice in their change are the fifty cent coins struck for the Centenary of Federation - there is one for each state and territory.
These coins are high-mintage items. The HH on them does not make them a rarity and between them, nearly 200 million examples were produced between 1988 and 1989.
The 1985 10c coin, with a mintage of 2 million, and the 2011 10c issue, with a mintage of 1.7 million, are the two gems. Besides those, there are, of course, the mint set only dates of 1986, 1987, 1995, and 1996.
1849 Double Eagle Gold Coin
The one remaining specimen is carefully preserved at National Numismatic Collections at the Smithsonian Institution. The 1849 Double Eagle is currently the rarest and most valuable coin in the world, with an estimated worth of nearly $20 million.
The 1966 wavy baseline 20c is still the most sought after rare Australian 20c coin. The coins are still in circulation, with one person commenting on the TikTok that they had three of the rare coins.
The title of Australia's rarest penny, while many think it's the 1930 penny, actually goes to the ones made at the Melbourne Mint in 1945. Featuring Thomas Humphrey Paget's effigy of King George VI and the jumping kangaroo reverse, only four pennies were produced at the Melbourne Mint that year.
The twenty cent coin was first introduced with decimal currency on 14 February 1966. The original reverse design of a platypus remained unchanged until 1995. This denomination has since been used for commemorative designs. All twenty cent coins in the first issue in 1966 were produced at the Royal Mint, London.
“Coins made in 1988 and 1989 with 'HH' on them are only worth $2,” he said in the video. “As there were 198 million of these minted.”
There are four $2 coins designs and two different $1 coins all with familiar faces on them.
How much will they cost? “On Thursday, the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) will release a 2022 C-mintmark version of the famous 2012 Red Poppy $2 coin,” Kandiah said. “60,000 coins will be minted and they will cost $15 each.
The original red poppy coins were released in 2012, Mr Kandiah said, and had a mintage of 503,000 – 40,902 of which were C-mintmarked.
The Royal Australian Mint has released a $2 collectors' coin to celebrate 200 years since the introduction of the European honeybee. At the time of writing, one of the 60,000 uncirculated coins was selling for as high as A$36 – but that's not the only sting in the tail of this commemorative release.
