Smaller wizarding schools existed, but these were often short-lived and poorly-regulated, as most were not registered with the respective Ministry of Magic of the country in which they operated. The quality of magical education on offer at these smaller, unregistered institutions was thus questionable.
Perhaps the oldest wizarding school around, Mahoutokoro (pronounced Mah - hoh - toh - koh - roh) has remained a mystery by hiding itself upon the volcanic island of Minami Iwo Jima and decorating its facades with ornamental white-colored Nephrite (which helps the building blend into the mist.)
Uagadou: The largest wizarding school in the world is located in Africa at an unspecified location called "Mountains of the Moon," the structure of which is described as being carved out of the side of a mountain and shrouded in mist.
There are eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide, all of which are registered with the International Confederation of Wizards.
In the films, Beauxbatons is portrayed as an all girls' school, but the books clearly indicate that boys attend the school as well – it is a boy who gets out of the carriage to lower the steps, for instance, and at the Yule Ball, Parvati Patil and her sister Padma end up dancing with Beauxbatons boys when Ron and Harry ...
8 It's Not An All-Boys School
In the books, this simply isn't the case, and there are several instances of female Durmstrang students being noted. The school was actually founded by a woman, Nerida Vulchanova, some time before the first Triwizard Tournament in 1294.

Although Africa has a number of smaller wizarding schools (for advice on locating these, see here), there is only one that has stood the test of time (at least a thousand years) and achieved an enviable international reputation: Uagadou.
Eros Like Hogwarts, Durmstrang has four Houses into which students are sorted according to temperament and capabilities. However, these Houses were not all founded at the same time - and they've changed over the centuries.
Koldovstoretz (Russian: колдовсторец) was the Russian wizarding school. It was one of the eleven schools registered with the International Confederation of Wizards. Students from Koldovstoretz played a version of Quidditch where they flew on entire, uprooted trees instead of broomsticks.
The Longbottoms
Neville comes from a long-line of pure-blood wizards, although we don't know as much about the individuals as we do with some other wizarding families. What we do know is that both of Neville's parents were pure-blood, as was his gran, Augusta.
Hogwarts is a coeducational, secondary boarding school, taking children from ages eleven to seventeen. Education at Hogwarts is not compulsory, with some students being home schooled as stated in the seventh book. Rowling initially said there are about one thousand students at Hogwarts.

The Cheshire School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a small Magical School located somewhere along the coast in Southeastern Australia. The school is especially known for its skilled teachings in spell-casting and potion making.
A common misconception about Beauxbatons, which exists thanks to Goblet of Fire's film adaptation, is that only girls are allowed to attend the school. In the books, this is not the case, although it's true that the female students get much more of the focus.
Amortentia is the most potent love potion of all and was memorably used by Merope Gaunt to trick and steal away Tom Riddle for years.
Durmstrang Institute is a wizarding academy, similar to Hogwarts School, believed to be located somewhere in western Russia or northern Europe.
Durmstrang, Quidditch star Victor Krum's wizarding school, is located in North Europe, somewhere really cold, like Scandinavia. Durmstrang is a tough, masculine sounding name, much like Krum and the school's hardy students. And it's actually German. It comes from "Sturn und Drang", meaning storm and stress.
Like Hogwarts, the school has four houses: Horned Serpent, Wampus, Pukwudgie and Thunderbird. Instead of placing a hat on students' heads, teachers at Ilvermorny bring the students to a hall with four carvings representing the houses. Whichever one reacts is the one the student is sorted into.
Tantra Insitute previously known as Tantra School of Insight is the Indian wizarding school located in Dhanaulti. Despite its seclusion and location, it has a rather large and state-of-the-art campus and is known to accept students from all over the subcontinent of India and from parts of Nepal and Bhutan.
But despite its monumental presence in popular culture, Hogwarts is actually one of the Wizarding World's smallest schools, with the African school Uagadou being its biggest.
In Rowling's Harry Potter series, Dumbledore demonstrated the ability to possess wandless magic on several occasions, most memorably when he cast Aresto Momentum without a wand to save Harry from falling to his death during a Quidditch match. Lord Voldemort was also able to practice powerful wandless magic.
She was sorted into Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and hated her time at the school due to never being given any positions of power.
If a Muggle were to look at Hogwarts, for example, all they would see is a ruin with signs telling them to keep out. Some magical locations are sequestered entirely from the Muggle world – with Diagon Alley, in particular, being accessible through a number of gateways between the two worlds.
