SpB is a discretionary income support payment that provides financial assistance to people who, due to reasons beyond their control, are in financial hardship and unable to earn a sufficient livelihood for themselves and their dependants.
Rate: $6.20 per fortnight for an eligible single person, and $3.10 per fortnight for each eligible member of a couple (i.e. $6.20 in total if both members of a couple are eligible).
A payment if you're not eligible for any other income support from us. You must also be in financial hardship.
You can claim Special Benefit for a child if all of the following apply: you can't get any income or family support payments because you're not a permanent resident. your child is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. you have custody.
Special Benefit is a taxable Centrelink payment if you're 16 or older.
On 1 December 2022, a one-off $4,000 income credit was added to the Work Bonus income bank of those at least pension age and in receipt of an Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment or certain Veterans entitlement. Prior to 1 December 2022, the Work Bonus income bank was capped at $7,800.

A payment to help students with the cost of moving from regional or remote areas for tertiary study. The Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) is a one off payment of up to $5,000. It's to help eligible students with the cost of moving to study. This is for study after you've finished year 12 or equivalent.

The Cost of Living Payment is a one-off payment of $250. You'll only get one Cost of Living Payment, even if you were getting more than one eligible payment or concession card. It's not taxable. You don't need to report it as income.
Carer Supplement is an annual payment of $600 for each eligible payment you get. You'll get this on top of your regular payment.

What is a valid reason for urgent payment Centrelink? If you or your family are in a situation of financial crisis, Centrelink's Crisis Payment can provide urgent help. This payment can cover essential expenses such as food and medical care for those affected by family or domestic violence.
If you get a taxable Centrelink payment, you may need to lodge a tax return at the end of the tax year. You'll get a Centrelink payment summary if you get any of these taxable Centrelink payments: ABSTUDY Living Allowance, if you're 16 or older.
Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) and Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) payments are generally taxable.
If you get extra income and a Centrelink payment, your income may be more than the tax-free threshold. If it is, you'll have to pay tax and may need to pay the Medicare levy at tax time. You'll find out after you lodge your tax return.
