The V size is the common US measurement for twisted, multi-ply bonded nylon or polyester threads. Larger numbers indicate heavier threads. The T sizes represent the “Tex” measurement system, where the number equals the weight in grams of 1000 meters of thread.
V threads have some specific angle between 30–60 degrees. Square threads have an angle of 90° between two threads. Square threads are more efficient than V-threads. Square threads are used in power screws whereas V-threads are used to provide high frictional force!
SunStop® V-92 Thread White is a high performance twisted multifilament polyester sewing thread with advanced UV protection and non-wicking finish specially designed for outdoor applications where seam strength retention and fade prevention during UV exposure are required.
For thread size V-92, use needle size: 120/19, 125/20 or 130/21.
V46 and V49 polyester thread are both suitable for sewing heavier materials like Sunbrella, WeatherMax, Surlast, as well as other canvases and heavy synthetic fabrics. This heavy duty polyester thread is ideal for sewing: bags, packs, awnings or marine projects.
V-69 is the heaviest commercial size recommended for home sewing machines. Heavier threads make your stitching more visible. The thread size measures the thread's thickness. If another weight is given for thread (like ounces), it refers to the amount of thread on the spool.
When discussing weight of thread, the smaller the number, the thicker the thread. The weight is determined by how many meters of thread it takes for a skein to weigh one kilogram. In this case, the 40 wt thread is slightly thicker (heavier) than the 50 wt thread.
Most triangular threadforms are based on an isosceles triangle. These are usually called V-threads or vee-threads because of the shape of the letter V.
One advantage of the V-thread is that the same cutting tool may be used for all pitches, whereas, with the American Standard form, the width of the point or the flat varies according to the pitch.
The square threads are not so strong as V-threads but they offer less frictional resistance to motion than Whitworth threads.
V Threads at Work
Sharp threads are also used as fastening screws for frictional connections such as screw connections with anti-fatigue shafts or tension anchors. Sharp V-threads are not well suited for linear motion applications or power transmission.
Due to that, square thread is better in power transmition, but it is more difficult to manufacture because it needs a flat cutting tool. V thread is easier to manufacture but generally used for fastening and tighting rather than power transmition.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: This is genuine Heminway & Bartlett Dabond 2000 UVR polyester thread, the thread used by professional sailmakers. Use V-138 for canvas and heavy weight sailcloth.
Kevlar® thread is one of the strongest and most fire retardant commercially available threads. It is about 2.5 times stronger than nylon or polyester, has almost no stretch, does not melt, and decomposes at 800°F.
6/0 would then be twice as thin, and 8/0 even thinner still. Once you think if it in this manner, it is pretty simple. But, there is no industry standard as to what that baseline zero should be for thickness, so every manufacturer has can have variations in what thread is rated.
Use V-69 for sewing canvas and light to medium weight sailcloth. Use needle size 18/110 or 19/120 with V-69 thread. Available in white 1 pound (approx. 5,110 yards) tubes.
40wt is a thread that is significantly heavier than 60wt, and noticeably heavier than the 50wt. While it is always good to have different size threads on hand, just in case, I don't usually sew on heavy fabrics, but I do consider the 40wt thread essential for my sewing stash.

A 30 weight thread is heavier than a 50 weight because it is denser and takes only 30 kilometers to equal one kilogram compared to 50. – The fraction on the thread spool tells you the weight and the number of plies or strands twisted together (for instance, 60/2 is 60 weight thread with 2 plies).
SGT KNOTS Nylon Bonded Thread diameter thickness is #69 (0.0115 inch).
