Yamato ate a Mythical Zoan Class Devil Fruit known as the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, which allows them to willingly transform into a hybrid or full form of the wolf deity described as being the Guardian Deity of Wano.
By now, it has been cleared up that Yamato's special devil fruit ability allows him to create ice. Yamato can use this special ability in numerous ways, with the most common one being freezing targets to temporarily immobilize them. Yamato can also use the ice to cover his weapon, thus increasing its damage.
While fighting against Kaido, he showed all the different versions of his devil fruit, including an awakened form. Like Luffy and Lucci's awakened forms, Yamato too had a cloud of smoke surrounding him. While it has not been officially confirmed, it is highly likely that he has awakened his devil fruit as well.
Additionally, the Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary lists Yamato's gender as a female in her card entry and then even goes on to refer to Yamato only using she/her pronouns.

Luffy is the by far the strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. As the Fifth Emperor of the Sea, Luffy is incredibly powerful and is able to hold his own against the Yonko of the One Piece world. He uses the power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi in incredible ways and keeps getting stronger.
