High acid foods – Citrus fruits and juices like orange and grapefruit, soda, chocolate and tomato products have a high acid content, which could decrease how much medicine is absorbed into your system for certain antibiotics.
Avoid eating iron-rich foods like sardines, beef, eggs, kale, tofu, and spinach around the same time as taking doxycycline. As with dairy, eat these at least two hours before or after taking your medicine.
In general, any medicine that can increase the risk of bleeding (such as clopidogrel, SSRI antidepressants, fish oils) may interact with azithromycin. Alcohol may increase the side effects of azithromycin and there is the potential for grapefruit products to interact with azithromycin; however, reports are uncommon.
Alcohol and caffeine.
Consuming alcohol while on antibiotics may potentially increase blood pressure and can have other unpleasant side effects, such as headache and/or upset stomach. Some antibiotics can also cause caffeine to build up in the body.
However, antibiotics can migrate into and accumulate in the egg of the chicken being treated. Eating eggs that contain antibiotic residues could provoke allergic reactions or lead to the development, or dominance of resistant bacterial strains, rendering treatment of human patients with antibiotics ineffective.
It's recommended that dairy products such as cheese, milk, butter, and yogurt should not be consumed until 3 hours after a dose of antibiotics is taken. Likewise, juices or supplements containing calcium may also reduce effectiveness.
If you are taking aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids, do not take them at the same time that you take Zithromax®. These medicines may keep azithromycin from working properly.
If you are taking azithromycin capsules, take them at least 1 hour before food or 2 hours after eating. If you have tablets or liquid, you can take them with or without food. The liquid can have a bitter aftertaste, so it can be a good idea to offer children a drink of fruit juice afterwards.
Is there any food or drink I need to avoid? You can eat and drink normally while taking azithromycin.
Antacids
Over-the-counter antacids can provide quick relief by neutralizing stomach acid that's causing these symptoms. But they can also affect the absorption of other medications. Antacids usually contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium. These ingredients can block the absorption of doxycycline from your gut.
Some foods you should avoid taking with doxycycline include milk, butter, cheese, eggs, kale, and spinach. If consuming any of these foods, eat or drink them two hours before or four hours after you take doxycycline.
During and after antibiotic use, focus on getting plenty of soluble fiber found in starchy tubers, squash, Jicama, Jerusalem artichoke and peeled fruits. Allium vegetables such as garlic, onion, leeks, chives, and scallions are great choices. Add them to food raw for the best source of prebiotics.
It may be taken with food or milk, if it upsets your stomach. You may open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a spoonful of cold, soft applesauce.
Is tiredness a normal side effect of antibiotics? Tiredness or fatigue is not a common side effect of antibiotic use, but it can happen. The antibiotics most likely to cause tiredness as a side effect are amoxicillin, azithromycin, and ciprofloxacin.
It takes approximately one week (seven days) for azithromycin to cure chlamydia.
Azithromycin may trigger rhabdomyolysis in the context of exercise and infection. Azithromycin may be myotoxic and should be prescribed with caution in exercising and infected patients.
Rare but serious side effects include severe skin problems, liver damage, and heart rhythm problems. You can often manage mild azithromycin side effects at home. But if you have symptoms of serious side effects, you should contact your healthcare provider right away.
