Topical amethocaine (Ametop) is superior to EMLA for intravenous cannulation. Eutectic mixture of local anesthetics.
EMLA refers to the “eutectic mixture of local anaesthetic” and contains two active ingredients, lidocaine and prilocaine. Each gram of cream contains 25 mg of lidocaine and 25 mg of prilocaine. It is a topical local anaesthetic agent that has a limited range of clinical applications in the lower limb.
EMLA cream should make the skin numb after about 1 hour. The skin will stay numb for 2–3 hours.
EMLA cream is put on a small patch of skin to make it numb. It is used to decrease the pain from starting IV's, blood collection, procedures such as lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations, and shots. This medicine may also be used for skin surgeries. This cream works like Novocain® at the dentist's office.
The depth of cutaneous anaesthesia increases with application time. In 90% of patients the anaesthesia is sufficient for the insertion of a biopsy punch (4 mm diameter) to a depth of 2 mm after 60 minutes and 3 mm after 120 minutes EMLA Cream treatment.
Your skin should remain numb for 3-4 hours, on average, once cream is removed depending on your skin type and location on the body. If using on broken skin, although our Miracle Numb Spray is much more suitable for this, only leave on broken skin for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time.
Ametop® increases the size of the blood vessels where it has been applied and can cause temporary redness. This is quite common and due to the action of the cream. It should be removed with a tissue before the procedure. EMLA cream® contains a mixture of two anaesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine.

Satisfactory dermal analgesia is achieved 1 hour after application, reaches maximum at 2 to 3 hours, and persists for 1 to 2 hours after removal. Absorption from the genital mucosa is more rapid and onset time is shorter (5 to 10 minutes) than after application to intact skin.
It has a medicine called lidocaine in it that numbs the skin and the tissue around where it is put on the skin. It takes 30 minutes to work. The cream may stay on for 1 hour and will keep working for another hour after it comes off. You can keep the tube of numbing cream to use again.
EMLA cream (Eutectic Mixture of Local Analgesics) is one of the local anesthetics. This cream is a combination of two analgesics equally combined including lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5%.
Topicaine had the greatest serum levels of individual lidocaine absorption (0.808 µg/mL), followed by generic EMLA (0.72 µg/mL), LMX-4 (0.44 µg/mL), BLT (0.17 µg/mL), and LET (0.13 µg/mL). On average, Topicaine had the highest serum lidocaine and MEGX levels: 0.438 µg/mL and 0.0678 µg/mL, respectively.
Answer: It varies. It is dependant on how much of the cream can penetrate into the skin. So the more incision you've made the faster the numbing should take effect.
After you've applied the cream, cover the whole area with plastic wrap, such as Saran Wrap. If the cream dries out, it won't work as well, so make sure the plastic wrap stays where it's supposed to be to get the full anesthetic effect.
