Demodex is a type of mite that lives in human hair follicles, usually on your face. Almost everyone has these mites, but they usually don't cause any problems. But Demodex can multiply too quickly in people who are immunocompromised or have other skin conditions.
Demodex, a genus of tiny parasitic mites that live in or near hair follicles of mammals, are among the smallest of arthropods with two species Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis typically found on humans. Infestation with Demodex is common; prevalence in healthy adults varying between 23-100%.
If you didn't already know, there are tiny parasitic mites living in our skin. They live in the pores on our face (and nipples!) and come out only at night – moving between hair follicles in their quest to find a mate.
Demodex mites are tiny eight-legged parasites that mostly live in hair follicles and oil glands on your face, neck, or chest. As alarming as this may sound, they're generally harmless. In fact, they can even help your skin by removing dead skin cells.
Where do face mites come from? Face mites (Demodex folliculorum or Demodex brevis) are believed to live in the hair follicles of all adults. They can transfer between people through close contact, but this is more likely during face-to-face contact, such as during a kiss.
Treatment for a mite infestation usually involves a cream, gel, lotion or wash containing an acaricide. An acaricide is a pesticide that kills ticks and mites. Your healthcare provider may recommend: Benzyl benzoate.
Medications typically used to treat demodex include metronidazole (topical),6 ivermectin (topical and oral), crotamiton (topical), and permethrin (topical).
The mites live for about two weeks. They spend most of their time tucked inside the pores, but while people sleep, they crawl out onto the skin's surface to mate and then head back to lay their eggs. Since they live inside your pores, you can't scrub them off by washing.
The most common symptoms of scabies, itching and a skin rash, are caused by sensitization (a type of “allergic” reaction) to the proteins and feces of the parasite. Severe itching (pruritus), especially at night, is the earliest and most common symptom of scabies.
Common parasitic skin diseases include creeping eruption, lice, and scabies.
Later, when the parasite moves under the skin, people may experience swellings under the skin that may be painful, red, or itchy. The swellings move around and typically are not pitting, which means that if you push on the swelling with a finger an indentation is not left behind.
What do intestinal worms look like? Intestinal worms that infect humans and their larvae vary in appearance and size: threadworms — these worms are like tiny white moving threads 2-13 mm long; they are visible to the naked eye. Strongyloides — the larvae are microscopic in size, but mature into 2-3 mm long worms.
Called mites or demodex folicular, these have thrived on human faces forever. In fact, they share a symbiotic relationship with us such that they need us to survive while we need them for good skin health, including for reducing acne and managing other skin infections.
At high concentrations, tea tree oil is a potent killer of Demodex mites. The problem is that solutions of 100% tea oil, or other high concentrations, are very irritating to the eye. So one approach is to thoroughly wipe the eyelashes and eyebrows with a diluted solution of tea tree oil, from 5% to 50%.
Demodex mites are common ectoparasites in human skin, the number of mites increases with age. Demodex mites are found in about one third of children and young adults, half of adults, and two-thirds of elderly people. The lower rate in children is probably caused by immature sebaceous glands.
The mite, Demodex follicularum, spends its entire lifetime living in our skin follicles. In the daytime they feed on our oily skin secretions, at night they leave the pore to find mates, and find new follicles in which to have sex and lay their eggs. If the thought makes you want to wash your face, forget it.
Sprays and aerosols containing syngergized pyrethrins should kill mites immediately on contact, though the treatment will only remain effective for up to a few hours. Insecticide sprays containing permethrin or bifenthrin are effective against many mites and should retain their killing properties for several weeks.
Common interventions used for Demodex infestation include metronidazole-based therapies, permethrin, benzoyl benzoate, crotamiton, lindane, and sulfur. Short courses of metronidazole taken orally have shown efficacy in reducing Demodex density.
Of all the treatment options investigated, tea tree oil has been shown to be the most promising option for killing Demodex mites (Liu 2010). Tea tree oil therapies may be more effective as they are known to have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti‐inflammatory properties (Liu 2010).

Face mites don't penetrate inside the body and they only live within the skin and hair follicles. Face mites eat what is called sebum, the greasy oil our skin makes to protect itself from drying out.
