In 2008 defence minister, Joel Fitzgibbon instructed the ADF to place a greater emphasis on recruiting women and addressing barriers to women being promoted to senior roles. In 2017-18, women made up 17.9% of The ADF workforce, and increase of 3.5 percentage points from 2013 (14.4%).
Among those who were currently serving: 79.4% were male (67,400 people) 20.6% were female (17,500 people) The average age of those in the Regular service was 34 years.
As at 30 June 2020, the participation rate of women in the Defence APS reached 45.4 per cent—an increase from 44.3 per cent as at 30 June 2019. In this period, the proportion of women in Executive Level positions increased from 33.8 per cent to 35.7 per cent.
In 2021, women made up 17.3% of the active-duty force, totaling 231,741 members; and 21.4% of the National Guard and reserves at 171,000 members.
There are no gender restrictions in the Navy, Army or Air Force. To apply for a job in the Navy, Army or Air Force you must be at least 16 years and 6 months old, though you can start thinking about a career in the ADF much earlier (see below).

Because of the high level of competition and standards needed to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the initial examination is intentionally difficult. Each applicant must work hard to prepare and perform at their best and exceed their competition.
Each branch of the military has age limits to enlist in active duty: Air Force: 17 - 39. Army: 17 - 35. Coast Guard: 17 - 31.
The maximum age to join the Army as an enlisted Soldier is 35, while Officers must accept their commission before age 31. However, the Army can lift some restrictions based on the need for certain roles to be filled. It's possible to receive an age waiver if you retire with 20 years of military service by age 55.
