Being a genius isn't as simple as being smart or having a high IQ. While intelligence is, of course, a prerequisite of genius status, there are other things at play here – including creativity, self-awareness, and an innate ability to ask questions few others have ever asked.
According to modern IQ standards, which place normal intelligence within the 90–109 range, a genius is often defined as anyone boasting a 130 or above score. Informally, polymaths—who excel in multiple fields—and experts are often considered geniuses.
There's a big difference between being really smart and being a genius. While geniuses tend to be exceptionally intelligent, they also use imagination and creativity to invent, discover or create something new within their field of interest.
Decades ago, scientists conducted testing on the person considered to be one of the most famous geniuses of all time: Albert Einstein. They found that there was no difference between how large his brain was compared to the brain size of individuals of average intelligence.
The 12 Qualities of Genius
To provide a structure for educators that can make the concept of genius useful, I've expanded its meaning to include 12 basic qualities: curiosity, playfulness, imagination, creativity, wonder, wisdom, inventiveness, vitality, sensitivity, flexibility, humor, and joy.
They are thinkers to the core in every respect. Their mind is always on the move, with thoughts constantly flowing through it. Not only is their mind constantly on the run but they also tend to think of a problem more productively by thinking about different perspectives to it.
If you often find yourself forgetting that you made plans with a friend or why you needed to go to the shops, then don't be too hard on yourself - you might be smarter than you think.
They define genius as a wealth of originality, creativity, and the ability to imagine or think in new ways and areas.
GENIUSES LOOK AT PROBLEMS IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
Most of us tend to stop thinking once we have a reasonable idea, and abandon any ideas that seem too difficult or impractical. However, geniuses do things differently. They don't stop at an initial idea but keep searching for different ways of arriving at a solution.
A messy desk and intelligence go hand in hand.
A study by the University of Minnesota suggests, that the messy desk of geniuses is actually linked to their intelligence. If you don't spend much time cleaning and organizing everything around you, your mind is obviously occupied with more important stuff.
Like most aspects of human behavior and cognition, intelligence is a complex trait that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors.
Anyone has the potential for genius or, at the very least, greatness. The key is to let go of the myth that giftedness is innate.
What is the difference between Genius and Intelligent? All intelligent people are not geniuses, but all geniuses are highly intelligent. A genius is more creative than a person who is merely intelligent. It is creativity that leads to invention of new products and is labeled as a prerequisite in a genius.
Classification of IQ scores
Those with a 145-154 score would be considered geniuses at the collegiate level. A person with a 155-164 IQ score is on par with Nobel Prize winners. High genius is defined as a score between 165 and 179, while the ultimate genius has a score between 180 and 200.
Science supports laziness
The data found that those with a high IQ got bored less easily, leading them to be less active and spend more time engaged in thought.
Faces that are perceived as highly intelligent are rather prolonged with a broader distance between the eyes, a larger nose, a slight upturn to the corners of the mouth, and a sharper, pointing, less rounded chin.
Geniuses have a denser concentration of mini-columns than the rest of the population – it seems that they simply pack more in. Mini-columns are sometimes described as the brain's 'microprocessors', powering the thought process of the brain. Research shows that geniuses have fewer dopamine receptors in the thalamus.
The smarter the person, the faster information zips around the brain, a UCLA study finds. And this ability to think quickly apparently is inherited. The study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, looked at the brains and intelligence of 92 people.
Is good memory an indicator of intelligence? Essentially, yes, but not in the way you may think. Short-term memory storage is linked to greater signs of intelligence as measured in IQ tests. But having perfect recall isn't necessarily correlated with high intelligence.
Exceptional memory is the ability to have accurate and detailed recall in a variety of ways, including hyperthymesia, eidetic memory, synesthesia, and emotional memory. Exceptional memory is also prevalent in those with savant syndrome and mnemonists.

According to studies, genetics can drive anywhere between 30-75% of the variations in people's IQ levels. However, certain environmental factors and socioeconomic status can prevent a person from achieving their true genetic potential of IQ levels.
