Continually check all mirrors while backing. Perform a walk- around. Walk around the vehicle before backing it and after it has been parked for a while. Look for children, animals, soft or muddy areas, potholes, tire hazards, or other possible dangers.
Always go slowly, watching carefully in all directions. To steer the car in reverse, turn the wheel in the direction you want the rear of the car to go. Turning the wheel to the right steers the back of the car to the right. Turning the wheel to the left steers to the left.
The most common mistake that drivers make when backing up is failing to look both ways behind them. Mirrors do not give you a full view. To see as much as possible, turn your body and head to the right and look out through the rear window.
Before backing up, turn your head so you can see through the rear window. Do not depend on your mirrors or sensors alone.
And as well, when you're backing up and you're looking out the back window, every vehicle length, approximately every vehicle length, stop the vehicle, do a 360° degree scan, and then look out the back window and continue reversing.
