Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a developmental disorder. Young people with Asperger's Syndrome have a difficult time relating to others socially and their behavior and thinking patterns can be rigid and repetitive.
There are other brain disorders that mimic autism symptoms, like ADHD and anxiety disorders, including selective mutism. Autism can be misdiagnosed as another disorder with some shared symptoms.

Kanner's Syndrome

Defining the Traits and Behaviors of Level 1 Autism

A number of particular facial features may be present in some people with 22q11. 2 deletion syndrome. These may include small, low-set ears, short width of eye openings (palpebral fissures), hooded eyes, a relatively long face, an enlarged nose tip (bulbous), or a short or flattened groove in the upper lip.
1 microdeletion syndrome is a rare chromosome disorder. Symptoms may include seizures, moderate to severe learning problems, speech delays, behavior problems, trouble sleeping, and developmental delays (learn to crawl, sit or walk later than other babies).
22q11. 2 deletion syndrome (22q11. 2DS) is a genomic disorder reported to associate with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in 15–50% of cases; however, others suggest that individuals with 22q11. 2DS present psychiatric or behavioral features associated with ASDs, but do not meet full criteria for ASD diagnoses.
In some ways Williams syndrome is the opposite of autism. For example, people with Williams syndrome love to talk and tell stories, whereas those with autism usually have language delay and little imagination. Many people with Williams syndrome draw disjointed pictures, some with autism draw pictures in perfect detail.
Level 3 is the most severe level of autism. People with level 3 autism have limited ability to speak clearly. Difficulty with both verbal and nonverbal communication makes it challenging to interact with others. This level of autism requires a higher level of support throughout life.

Sanfilippo is the underlying cause for autism in children with this genetic abnormality. A diagnosis of Sanfilippo does not take away the autism diagnosis. If a child is diagnosed with autism, but the underlying cause of Sanfilippo is not recognized, this is considered to be a “incomplete” diagnosis.

The term PDD is based largely on a developmental view, whereas the term ASD is relatively based on a symptomatic view. Psychiatric disorders fundamentally consist of various factors such as developmental problems and psychological symptoms.
