While it may be extremely difficult, it's best to stay out of direct sunlight for five to seven days prior to your dermaplaning appointment. You should avoid sunburn at all costs within this window; sunburn causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed, which makes dermaplaning impossible.
Pre & Post Care Instructions for Dermaplaning
Stop use of any scrubs, Retin-A, retinols, take home microdermabrasion, glycolic or any other peels, exfoliants, or tanning products at least 72 hours prior to your appointment.
When preparing for a dermaplaning treatment, you'll want to make sure your face is clean and free of any products. So, you should wash your face with a gentle cleanser and carefully pat it dry. You'll also need to remove all makeup, dirt, oil, and other debris from the surface of your skin.
Shaving is merely a close cut of the hair. It has zero effect on hair follicles and, thus, no effect on hair growth.
You'll get best results if you hold the blade at a 45-degree angle. Try to keep the strokes in a downward motion to avoid irritation. You'll see dead skin cells and hair start to accumulate as you go. Make sure not to go over any areas that are inflamed or irritated, which can cause bleeding.
The skin should be dry and totally clean before dermaplaning. “You should double cleanse, and use an acid-based cleanser to remove any product on the skin,” says Dr Goel. The drier the skin, the better (and safer) the results. With one hand, stretch the skin and hold it taut where you are dermaplaning.
To give a really short answer to what serum to use after dermaplaning: hyaluronic acid serum. The benefits are amazing and it doesn't cause potentially unwanted skin reactions as other ingredients can.
You'll want to cleanse your face gently immediately after dermaplaning. A gentle cleanser will remove any debris or residue left behind on the skin's surface.
Don't Use Scrubs, Exfoliants, and Acids
Because dermaplaning is a skin exfoliation method, you'll want to avoid facial scrubs and other treatments. You should wait two weeks before exposing your skin to any of the following: Retinol. Glycolic acid.
After dermaplaning, the skin is often sensitive and dry so use only essential products in your skincare routine - a cleanser, serum/moisturizer, and sunscreen. Ensure the products are mild, without acids, retinol, or other potentially abrasive ingredients. Follow this routine for at least 48 hours post-procedure.
Dermaplane: 1x every 1-3 weeks
Because it physically removes the outermost layer of skin, it is considered a more intensive form of exfoliation and overdoing it can cause irritation. We recommend dermaplaning at home every 1-3 weeks.
Over the years, internet myths have led women in Philadelphia, PA to believe that dermaplaning makes facial hair grow back thicker and darker than it once was. However, this is not the case. It's common to feel a little stubble as your hair starts growing back in after dermaplaning.
The hair will grow back, but it won't change colour or thickness. And new skin cells will grow which will eventually become dead skin cells. But this can all be solved with a quick and regular treatment within minutes.
After dermaplaning is the perfect time to introduce active skincare products, such as Vitamin C serums or retinol, into your skincare regime as they really be able to penetrate the skin. SPF, as always is essential - I recommend SPF 30 or above, but SPF50 is ideal.
Aquaphor is my final go-to when I dermaplane. This ointment is more multi-purpose than you think, and it's a hidden gem for dry skin! After spritzing with Thermal Water, I slather this balm all over my skin and treat it as an overnight mask.
If you layer retinol on the skin after dermaplaning it will lead to the skin becoming irritated, dry with flaky patches of skin and redness. This is simply too much exfoliation for the skin with retinol increasing the speed of which skin cells rejuvenate it can strip away the sebum needed in the protective barrier.
I prefer to dermaplane at night so I can follow-up with my full evening skincare routine, and leave my skin free of makeup for awhile. I allow the products to absorb before going to bed, and always make sure to have a clean pillowcase! Protect that precious new skin and clean pores!
Clients with oily skin may notice that the skin feels more oily following the procedure due to the removal of the vellous hair that normally absorbs the oil. A proper skincare routine will help to even the skin out as it settles.
Dermaplaning is recommended to be done on dry, clean skin. I tend to do my own dermaplaning first thing in AM prior to cleansing or products. Showering or exercising prior can open up the pores and cause sensitivity or catching of the blade during dermaplaning.
Patients frequently believe that their facial hair would regrow thicker and darker following dermaplaning. We want to reassure you that this is untrue. Only hormonal changes or imbalances can cause a person's hair to change color or thickness.
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method that requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently shave the top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, dead skin layer, and vellus hair, peach fuzz.
Unlike waxing, dermaplaning does not completely remove the facial hair from the follicle, you're just shaving off the hair that appears on the top of your skin which means that it might grow back a little sooner than using the other methods.
