“Everyone who can speak can learn to use a singing voice,” says Joanne Rutkowski, professor of music education. “The quality of the voice is dependent on many factors; however, barring a physical vocal disability, everyone can learn to sing well enough to sing basic songs.”
While we can't guarantee that all bad singers will become “good,” most if not all singers can become better at what they do, if they put in the time and effort necessary. What is this? Bad singers may struggle with pitch, or bad technique, or rhythm, or something else.
Singing is a natural gift, but it also takes work to improve. An individual with a little bit of talent can go much further than someone with a lot of talent who doesn't work to develop it. No matter where you fall on the talent spectrum, rest assured that your hard work and practice will pay off in the end.
There are many factors that can go into losing your voice. It can be as simple as having some acid reflux, or a mild sore throat that is causing you pain and now allowing you to sing. The vocal cords might have been strained, or maybe you have bronchitis or laryngitis.
Just as it sounds, vocal fatigue results when you've overused your voice without proper recovery time. The vocal folds are muscles and just like any other muscle or muscle group, they get tired, sore, and don't work as well after a strenuous workout.
Is singing innate? The ability to sing isn't necessarily something you're born with. You can be born with the right genetics and physiological features that put you at a better vocal disposition to become a singer, but that doesn't mean singing is innate.
It's good news, because yes, on a basic level, anyone can learn to sing and sound good. Provided you are able to speak and have working vocal cords, you can learn the techniques that enable you to sing. Like the rest of your body, your vocal cords slowly change and age over the course of your life. As you get older, the fibres in your vocal folds become stiffer and thinner and your larynx cartilage becomes harder. This limits the voice and is why elderly people's voices can sound “wobbly” or “breathier”.
It is quite simple: The sound you are used to hearing is quite different to what other people hear. Your voice is literally “in your head”, what you are used to hearing is very different to what comes out of your mouth.
It also found that roughly 20 percent of people can't sing accurately because they don't have good control of their vocal muscles.
With enough practice and hard work, anyone with a voice can learn how to sing really well. Of course, talent plays a major role in how quickly and easily you are going to learn. But that doesn't mean you're not able to become a great singer if you're not born with great singing talent.
When a person is tone deaf, also called having amusia, they cannot recognize differences in pitch. This means that they can't sing along with even simple tunes, and can't match the pitch of their voice to the pitch of a piece of music that's being played.
To give you a rough idea, take at least a month to get used to singing regularly and learn the fundamentals. It should take between 3 and 4 months to get comfortable with your voice. To learn a variety of vocal techniques, you'll need at least a year. To sing like a professional, you'll need at least a couple of years.
Vocal ability largely comes down to largely comes down to being able to control the pitch of the sound and the main reason why some people appear to be poor singers comes down to lacking the right motor control. “You can think of music production and singing in particular as a physical skill,” Hutchins explains.
Singing enhances lung function
We often take our lungs for granted, but most of us rarely use them to their full capacity. The way singing requires you to breathe makes you do just that, increasing your lung capacity as well as engaging the muscles around the ribcage.
To know if you can sing, try taking an online tone-deaf test to see if you struggle with pitch, tone, and rhythm. You can also try asking a friend or family member you trust to listen to your singing voice and give you their honest opinion.
