You might choose to have a sharp cheddar, a semi-soft blue cheese, and a hard cheese like parmesan or gruyere. Or maybe a cheddar, soft brie, and a gouda. Add nuts (candied pecans, cayenne maple glazed walnuts, Rosemary Olive Oil Marcona Almonds, etc.), and have a sweet element on the cheese board too.
For a mac and cheese recipe, consider the combination of sharper cheddar cheeses and a flavorful Parmesan. This cheese adds a boost of fruity, nutty notes to your favorite macaroni recipes. Parmesan is also ideal for grating on top of mac and cheese before you bake it to add golden color.
Mozzarella is known for its light taste that melts and stretches, then comes cheddar cheese with its rich and bold taste. Mix those two together and you get a delicious flavor that compliments American dishes and many more!
Some skeptics may decide that only American cheese or chedder cheese are right for a grilled cheese sandwich, but I will say that mozzarella and feta are also worth considering! In fact, together, melty mozzarella and creamy, salty feta provide the perfect flavor balance and texture in these cheese pitas!
The main character says the perfect grilled cheese is made with equal parts American cheese, yellow Cheddar and white Cheddar cheese. Since yellow and white Cheddar don't have much of a difference I opt for ½ American and ½ cheddar.
Match companion and complementary flavors.
Play up the characteristics of the cheese and try to match flavors: mild goes with mild and strong goes strong. Use your sense of smell here, too, and pair nutty flavor notes with one another, or fruitier cheeses with fruits and jams.
Fresh Mozzarella Cheese Pairings:
- In addition to tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese is also well paired with onions and mushrooms, eggplants, roasted peppers, spinach... - Fruits: adding berries, peaches, melon cubes and pears can make your salad dish more wonderful when combined with mozzarella.
Pumpernickel is wonderful with Brie, it's slightly sweet-yet-sour taste complements the buttery flavor of the cheese. Make sure to toast the pumpernickel to add a little crunch and warmth to your Brie. Another tasty option is to pair Brie with garlic bread!
Provolone: This cow's milk cheese originated in Italy. It tastes mild when young, and grows sharper as it's aged. Sliced thin, young provolone is one of the best cheese choices to use in sandwiches—it goes with everything!
Pairing Gouda
Especially on a cheese board, we suggest mixing fresh fruit—like apples, peaches, or pears—alongside dried fruit—dried apricots and cherries—for extra variety. If you have an aged gouda on hand, which is sweeter and more complex, opt for a sweet pairing with chocolate or even a brownie.
In summary, Brie possesses a refined taste and smooth texture, whereas Camembert is a more rustic cheese with an earthier taste and texture. Both cheeses are absolutely delicious in their own right.
Choosing Cheese To Pair With Honey
The types of cheese that truly shine next to honey include Brie, blue cheese, goat cheese, or any sharp, aged cheese.
Gouda cheese is available in a variety of types. While the milder ones are perfect for a pizza or sandwiches, the stronger aged gouda cheese is perfect for pairing up with grapes. The stronger flavour of the cheese comes out perfect when you compliment it with the sour and sweet grapes.
Gouda melts more easily.
The higher fat content in Gouda cheese makes it a meltier cheese than cheddar. Cheddar is a melting cheese but melts differently due to its lower fat content.
A matured cheese, the gruyère is slightly crumbly and made from raw cow's milk. Coming in second place was a Gorgonzola Dolce DOP, a soft, blue buttery cheese made by De' Magi from Italy. Le Gruyère AOP surchoix is the world's new No. 1 cheese.
Very hard cheeses, like Parmigiano-Reggiano or aged dry Jack, will be dry and won't melt well, though they can be incorporated into melty cheese dishes as a secondary cheese for a punch of flavor. High-fat cheeses include Swiss, cheddar, Gouda, Edam, blue cheeses and Colby or Monterey Jack.
The creamy feta with the deliciously cheesey gouda is a perfect match. Feel free to throw in some olives or even a few sundried tomatoes. This dip is great for a formal Holiday dinner-party and easy enough for a laid-back treat for surprise visitors.
One of the meals we both remember best is cheddar and feta quesadillas, which we ate in his sparse bachelor-pad living room, probably while watching Seinfeld or Arrested Development. The ingredients for this recipe were so simple that its spicy-creamy-tangy combination took us completely by surprise.
And finally, my husband and I both agreed that a generous sprinkling of salty, umami, aged Parmesan atop each serving really helped to balance out the fresh, creamy, tangy flavors of the feta, so I highly recommend using both cheeses here.
