As per the regime, Marilyn Monroe was not to eat any kind of nuts, chocolate, olives, oysters or clams or foods high in salt. New York City's Makeup Museum recently unearthed an artefact revealing Hollywood sensation Marilyn Monroe's diet and beauty regime.
She loved ice sundaes
“P.S. It's a good thing, I suppose, that I eat simply during the day, for in recent months I have developed the habit of stopping off at Wil Wright's ice cream parlor for a hot fudge sundae on my way home from my evening drama classes.
“Every night I stop at the market near my hotel and pick up a steak, lamb chops or some liver, which I broil in the electric oven in my room. I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all. I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots…
1. Stewed Prunes. According to Laren Stover's 2001 book The Bombshell Manual of Style, Monroe would usually start her day at around 8 a.m. with orange juice or stewed prunes.
Her morning breakfast routine: a glass of warm milk with two raw eggs beaten into it. This was followed by a multi-vitamin. "I doubt if any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry,'' Marilyn said of what is, nowadays, considered an uncommon breakfast.
On KUOW's The Beat, Megan Sukys and Elizabeth Austen listen to Madeline DeFrees read “To Marilyn Monroe Whose Favorite Color Was White” and discuss the poem.
Marilyn Monroe Lifted Weights
Marilyn herself knew the importance of physical exercise. She owned her own weight set and she worked-out years before most people understood the benefits of staying fit and healthy.
She was a natural blonde
Monroe's iconic platinum blonde locks were bottle-born, like many other stars' at the time. For women hoping to make a name for themselves in the film industry in the 1940s, blonde was considered the most versatile hair color.
But, she was also known for her love of dogs. Though she also once owned a cat and a parakeet, Monroe seemed to always have a pup at her side. Among her beloved pack of canines was a French poodle given to her by pal Frank Sinatra and dubbed Maf, which was reportedly short for Mafia.
For dinner, she never dined out. Instead of opting for the best restaurant in town, she'd stop at a market near her hotel for steak, liver, or lamb chops, which she'd broil herself using an electric oven. On the side, she'd eat raw carrots. And when she wanted to treat herself, it was all about an ice cream sundae.
Over her lifetime, the blonde bombshell had a library of over 400 books. She would often travel to bookstores, read a random book and if she liked it, it was hers. Monroe considered reading her favourite hobby. The book that was reportedly her absolute favourite was Ulysses by James Joyce.
Indeed, Marilyn followed diets every now and then but she loved to cook.
Marilyn Monroe famously told interviewers that she wore Chanel No. 5 to bed (and nothing else), but it wasn't her only favorite.
Monroe's intelligence carried over to her beauty regimen. When it comes to wellness, Monroe was often ahead of her time. She favored dry shampoo—baby powder on her roots every two days—and often spoke of her disdain for excessive sun-bathing, citing skin damage.
She was also a fan of cold cream, like Pond's, and other iconic products we still use today, including Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream and Nivea Creme, and even olive oil, which she also reportedly applied to her skin to offset dryness.
Monroe's natural eye color was most likely to be blue, as recorded in her sister's autobiography (48) – “but our eyes were different … Norma Jeane's were blue like our mother's” – and on her autopsy report (49), in addition to Capote's description of her “blue-grey eyes” while wearing glasses (46).
According to Vogue, the author Pamela Keogh noted that Monroe had her hair bleached every three weeks and swore by dry shampoo— baby powder on her roots.
The Cut. The Monroe bob is never too polished, and that's the magic that keeps it feeling modern. “To me, Marilyn Monroe's hairstyle has always resembled a more effortless, undone version of the Hollywood wave,” says Redken celebrity stylist Kiley Fitzgerald.
False teeth
It's said that Marilyn Monroe originally had an overbite (that was fixed during her time at Columbia pictures) as well as false teeth, which were noted at the time of her death. Sadly, Marilyn Monroe died at the young age of 36 from an overdose of barbituates in 1962.
X-rays revealed in 2013 that Marilyn Monroe did in fact have some plastic surgery. Notes made by her physician state that the movie star had work done to her nose and chin. There were many reports early in her career that she refined the tip of her nose to make it appear smaller.
Marilyn Monroe's signature red lips were famously achieved with five coats of Guerlain's Rouge Diabolique lipstick. Although the original lipstick is no longer sold, many people report this red beauty from Besame to be a pretty close dupe. You'll find it to be a flattering shade of red for you too.
But why is it that Marilyn Monroe is still so popular? Perhaps it was her body. Monroe had an hourglass figure; a curvy, ultra-feminine shape. Her modelling career, which remained strong even into her later years as an actress, concentrated largely on her bodily beauty and sexuality.
Lawford says that in "slurred" speech Monroe told him she was "tired and would not be coming" to dinner. Then, as her voice became less audible, she told him, "Say goodbye to Pat. Say goodbye to Jack [President Kennedy]. And say goodbye to yourself, because you're a nice guy."
It is a simple bust-firming routine which consists of lifting five-pound weights from a spread-eagle arm position to a point directly above my head. I do this 15 times from a position with my arms above my head. Then, with my arms at a 45-degree angle from the floor, I move my weights in circles until I'm tired. '
