One day, Silas suffered from a cataleptic fit, which members of his community interpreted in different ways. His good friend - or who he thought was a good friend - William Dane, said that the fit was a sign of Satan taking over. The church's money went missing, and in its place was found Silas's knife.
Silas Marner becomes obsessed with the acquisition and hoarding of gold after he losses his faith in God and in other people. Gold, as an object, becomes the recipient of all the human love and affection that he once directed toward his friends and community.
From his mother, Silas had learned the medicinal properties of herbs, and once he uses his knowledge to bring relief to a sick woman. For some time after that, he is beset by villagers wanting charms against disease or other evils.
Silas has ended up in Raveloe because the members of his religious sect in Lantern Yard, an insular neighborhood in a larger town, falsely accused him of theft and excommunicated him.
In the beginning of the novel, the protagonist, Silas, loses his friends, his faith, and his fiancé when he is framed for theft. Exiled, he moves from Lantern Yard to the idyllic English country side of Raveloe, a farming community. There, he replaces people and human interaction with money.

Thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece, Silas (Paul Wesley) was a powerful witch that was part of a group known as The Travelers alongside his fiancée Qetsiyah (Janina Gavankar). Silas convinced Qetsiyah to make an immortality elixir for them to drink so they could be together for eternity.
As he verifies that the woman is in fact Molly, Godfrey sees Silas holding the child and asks him if he intends to take the child to the parish. Silas replies that he wants to keep her, since both he and she are alone, and without his gold he has nothing else to live for.
William Dane: William Dane is Silas's former best friend at Lantern Yard. At the start of the novel, William betrays Silas by framing him for theft and marrying Silas's fiancée Sarah.
Silas leaves to find Stefan and Amara. Silas finds Amara tied on a tree and while he tries to untie her, she begs him to kill her. Stefan appears and they start fighting, with Stefan finally stabbing him. Silas dies and Amara stabs herself.
Amara told him that she wanted to die and Silas understood her decision. As Silas was cutting Amara's throat, Stefan intervened and they had a fight and he dropped his knife. Stefan threw the knife into Silas' chest, killing him.
He and his friend named Qetsiyah, another powerful witch, created the very first spell of immortality to make him truly immortal. This spell made him a true immortal, completely immortal and indestructible.
However,it's currently unclear how he'll return as he may just be another Silas deception. In their spoilery reveal, they stated, "Next Thursday's episode features another big return, as well as a passing glimpse of Silas' real face — rumor has it he looks a lot like an actor out of Atlanta named Scott Parks.
Silas is Bod's guardian. The novel heavily implies that he's a vampire: he has no reflection in mirrors, he sleeps in a steamer trunk, and he assumes a batlike form when he's not in his tall, pale, human form.
Silas's knowledge of herbs: Silas inherits his mother's knowledge of medicinal herbs. When he saves Sally Oates's life by administering a medicine made from an unusual herb, the townspeople question if he is devil-sent.
Finally, seeing the child's wet boots, it occurs to Silas to wonder where she came from, and he follows her tracks along the road until he finds her mother's body lying in the snow.
Klaus is far more powerful than Silas because he's physically the second most powerful thing walking the planet (behind the Beast of the prophecy). Silas wasn't even as strong as a vampire, he's barely stronger than a human.
In the ensuing battle, Fowler distracted Silas long enough for Optimus to defeat Nemesis. In doing so, Silas' body was crushed under Nemesis, leaving MECH's leader in critical condition. As he laid connected to a life-support machine, his soldiers planned to revitalize him with Breakdown's body.
Back at Salvatore central, Silas is ready to destroy the other side so he doesn't get stuck there and he can die and reunite with his love Amara. He promises Elena he'll bring Bonnie, but first he has to find the anchor and destroy it.
In the woods, Shane explains to Bonnie that Silas lost the ability to do magic when he became immortal, so he'll need Bonnie to do his work for him, using the power of three massacres of 12.
At the end of the episode it is revealed why Silas wants Katherine. Katherine's blood is now the Cure since she took it and Silas wants her so he can drain her blood and get rid of the Cure once and for all, while Tessa wants Katherine so that she can take the Cure and kill Silas herself.
He's not really a vampire, even though he needed blood to wake up and to sustain his energy. He was a powerful witch when he was mortal, and although immortal--he still has some magic and power. So, Silas can literally masquerade as anyone. He has worn the face of Caroline, Klaus, Liz, and more.
Silas wants the cure to cure himself. He uses the ability to create illusions (the source of this ability is unknown, as he can supposedly no longer perform magic) to take the form of Shane as he left his tomb. He took Bonnie with him, healing her and pretending to be Shane to earn her trust.
To save Silas, don't shoot him with Laura in the final chapter in his lair. This action causes Travis, Laura, and Ryan to die, and the infection will continue to spread through Hackett's Quarry. Saving him leads to you failing to complete the best « Rough Night » ending.
(Chapter 10) Laura Hesitates and Kills Silas
If you fail the QTE, Travis and Laura will wrestle over the weapon and Laura will shoot him. Following Travis' death, Laura will have the option to kill Silas, resulting in both Ryan and Laura surviving.
