In Japan, Waseda University initiated the WABOT project in 1967, and in 1972 completed the WABOT-1, the world's first full-scale "intelligent" humanoid robot, or android. Its limb control system allowed it to walk with the lower limbs, and to grip and transport objects with hands, using tactile sensors.
AI is best suited for handling repetitive, data-driven tasks and making data-driven decisions. However, human skills such as creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and complex problem-solving still need to be more valuable and easily replicated by AI.
The program, known as Eugene Goostman, is the first artificial intelligence to pass the test, originally developed by 20th-century mathematician Alan Turing. In the decade since, many more programs have purported to pass the Turing test. Most recently, Google's AI LaMDA passed the test and even controversially convinced a Google engineer that it was “sentient.”
This would lead to an exponential situation where human intelligence is quickly and irretrievably left far behind by machine intelligence. Consequently, we'd lose authority and control. Best case, we become slaves to the machines; worst case, we're exterminated as surplus to requirements.
Today's A.I. systems cannot destroy humanity. Some of them can barely add and subtract.
The first AI programs
The earliest successful AI program was written in 1951 by Christopher Strachey, later director of the Programming Research Group at the University of Oxford.

Mirroring human traits onto machines might create misconceptions of what artificial intelligence actually is, but Sci-Fi writers and computer researchers seem to agree on one thing: Artificial intelligence is hugely exciting. No, the machines will not become evil and turn on us.
While it is unlikely that AI will replace programmers, it will have a significant impact on the programming job market. On one hand, AI should automate many responsibilities of programmers. This includes writing code templates and debugging. This will reduce the amount of time and effort required by human programmers.
