Australia has purchased 72 Lockheed F-35A jets to form three squadrons, with all aircraft scheduled to be fully operational this year.
The preferred location for the new F-35A squadron is Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass., while the F-15EXs are slated for Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, La., and Fresno Air National Guard Base, Calif.

F-35A Lightning II aircraft
Australia has committed to 72 F-35A aircraft – comprised of three operational squadrons - two at RAAF Base Williamtown and one at RAAF Base Tindal.
RAAF Base Amberley is Defence's largest operational air base. Established in 1940, the base is 40km south-west of Brisbane.
The U.S. Navy is the largest F-35C operator and has plans to procure 273 F-35Cs.
The F-22 Raptor is the most powerful air superiority fighter in the world, while the F-35 is probably the most advanced multi-role fighter right now. That means that the Raptor is more effective in air-to-air combats (faster and could operate at higher altitude).
There are just 450 fifth-generation F-35s in use across the services, said Heather Penney of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, a think tank based in Arlington, Va.
BAE Systems Australia plays a vital role in the global sustainment of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft — the world's most advanced fighter jet. We sustain the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) fleet of F-35 fighter jets. By 2024, the RAAF will have 72 of these aircraft.
DIGITAL. The F-35 is the country's newest fighter, bought to replace the RAAF's F/A-18A/B Classic Hornets that were in service since 1985 and retired in late 2021. Over the coming years, Australia will purchase 72 as part of the $17 billion AIR 6000 Phase 2A/B program, with all expected to be fully operational by 2023.
"The F-22 Raptors have arrived in the Northern Territory as part of the EAC Program," AVM Goldie said. “This program has been in place since 2017, which builds on a broad range of long-standing air exercises and training activities undertaken between Australia and the United States.
F-35 production technology is decades ahead of the Su-57
The FOG can mill materials as large as 15 meters long and was described by the former technical operations deputy for F-35 global production, Dr. Don Kinard, as “the most accurate machine tool in the world for its size.”
1 statement to Breaking Defense that a total of 30 F-35B aircraft have so far been delivered to the UK with a further seven due for delivery in 2023. The remaining 11 will follow in 2024 and 2025, according to the spokesperson.
Although the F-35 has been in service for only about six years, it has already been used in at least six combat operations.
For the most part, the F-15 is superior to the F-35 in terms of weapons and ability to defend itself. The F-15 Eagle supports more weapons load capacity with nearly 20 different options for armament. It's more versatile when you compare that to the payload capacity of the Lightning II (which only has room for 6).
The F-35 includes a host of electronic warfare and sensor systems that give it additional capabilities compared to the F-22, such as the ability to counter anti-aircraft systems and provide better surveillance and target acquisition. This can give the F-35 a decisive advantage in highly aggressive environments.
The J-20 is both faster and has a longer range than the F-35, while later models of the J-20 have supercruise – an ability to fly at high speed without afterburners. However, the Chinese fighter jet does have inferior stealth attributes to the F-35.
Program Stats. As a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) participant, the JASDF has an established program of record of 147 F-35 Aircraft, consisting of 105 F-35 A models and up to 42 F-35 B models.
The F-22 is faster than the F-35, but both aircraft are considered to be very fast. Range: The F-22 Raptor has a combat radius of approximately 600 nautical miles, while the F-35 Lightning II has a combat radius of approximately 590.
“The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is the cornerstone of our future fighter force and air superiority. Achieving air superiority in a future fight is strongly dependent on full-spectrum dominance. The F-35 and its 5th Generation capabilities are part of our fighter force design that outpaces key competitors.”
The U.S. Navy has only one base currently in Australia: Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt in Exmouth, Western Australia. . There is one other non-Navy U.S. base in Australia: Pine Gap in Alice Springs, in the center of Northern Territory.
Pine Gap – Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap (JDFPG), near Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt – located on the northwest coast of Australia, 6 kilometres (4 mi) north of the town of Exmouth, Western Australia. Robertson Barracks – located in Darwin, Northern Territory.
One of the things that springs to mind is Russia's fleet of Su-57s, their fifth generation stealth fighter jets intended to rival the F-35.
