Most Aboriginal people livein New South Wales and Queensland. More than 68% of Aboriginal people live in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria while Western Australia and the Northern Territory contribute only 22% of the Aboriginal population.
New South Wales had the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (339,500 people), followed by Queensland (273,200 people) and Western Australia (120,000 people). These three states comprised almost three-quarters of the total Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (732,800 people or 74.5%).
Of note, Western Sydney has the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of any region in Australia.
Indigenous people represent about 5% of the world's population. The vast majority of them – 70% – live in Asia.
While only 1% of the population in Major Cities is Indigenous, 45% of the population in Very Remote areas is Indigenous. Approximately 35% of Australia's Indigenous people live in Major cities, with 65% living in regional and remote areas.

Alaska has the highest relative population of Native Americans, who make up 19.74% of the state's total population, about 145,816 people. Oklahoma has the second-highest relative population at 13.36% of the state's total population.
In Canada, 1,807,250 people identified themselves as Indigenous in the 2021 Census, accounting for 5.0% of the country's total population (Table 1). Of all Indigenous people in Canada, 15.7% (284,470) lived in Alberta, the third-largest number behind Ontario (406,585) and British Columbia (290,210).
The largest Native American reservation is the Navajo Reservation. Its 16 million acres of land are located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. This is also the most populated Native American reservation with approximately 169,000 residents.
There is no one Aboriginal word that all Aborigines use for Australia; however, today they call Australia, ""Australia"" because that is what it is called today. There are more than 250 aboriginal tribes in Australia. Most of them didn't have a word for ""Australia""; they just named places around them.
NSW and VIC are the most culturally diverse states
The top 5 ancestries of both states are English, Australian, Chinese, Irish and Scottish. We also found that China, India, England and Vietnam are the most common countries where immigrants are from.
It is true that there has been, historically, a small number of claims that there were people in Australia before Australian Aborigines, but these claims have all been refuted and are no longer widely debated. The overwhelming weight of evidence supports the idea that Aboriginal people were the first Australians.
There are 468000 Aboriginals in total in Australia in which 99 percent of them are mixed blooded and 1 percent of them are full blooded.

Since legislation for Indigenous people was a state matter, each state found its own definition for 'Aboriginal'. Examples: Western Australia: a person with more than a quarter of Aboriginal blood. Victoria: any person of Aboriginal descent.
The Wiradjuri are the largest Aboriginal group in central New South Wales, by area and population, and second largest in Australia, with lands stretching east from the Great Dividing Range, to Hay and Nyngan in the west, Gunnedah to the north and Albury to the south.

The Northern Territory has the highest proportion of Indigenous residents among its population – an estimated 32% (79,000 people) in 2022 (Figure 2).
Wiradjuri country is the largest in NSW, stretching from the eastern boundary of the Great Dividing Range.
For example, from 2006 to 2021, the Indigenous population grew by 56.8%, or nearly four times faster than the non-Indigenous population during the same period (+15.4%). The Métis population grew by 60.7%, the First Nations population grew by 54.3% and the Inuit population grew by 40.1%.
Aboriginal origins
Humans are thought to have migrated to Northern Australia from Asia using primitive boats. A current theory holds that those early migrants themselves came out of Africa about 70,000 years ago, which would make Aboriginal Australians the oldest population of humans living outside Africa.
