With Tabs Fastened Easily First of all, the diaper tabs go in the front, near your baby's tummy. They should fasten easily without having to tug them too much. If the tabs meet or overlap in the middle with no problem, the diaper might be too big.
If the closure tabs are closer to the hips than the stomach, then it is time to go up a size in diapers (1). The diaper tabs should close on the front of the stomach to prevent leaks and chafing. Some brands have a diaper size-up indicator on the front.
If the tapes meet in the centre of 'the zone', or are still on the coloured part of the nappy, then you're spot on. Once they're moving towards, or are in the white area, it's time to move up a size and avoid - or at least reduce the chances of - those leaks.
Next, fasten the tabs to the decorated strip on the front of the disposable diaper. Remember not to make it too tight, and make sure that you position the tapes so that they don't contact the baby's skin.
It should not require too much pulling or adjusting to secure the tabs. On the contrary, if the tabs overlap toward the center of the waist, you need to go down a size.
If you notice excessive gapping at the legs and waist, the diaper may be too large for your baby. Let your baby gain another pound or two and then try again.
The colorful markings should be on the front, facing you. Then, pull the front of the diaper up between your baby's legs and lay it on your baby's belly. Lift the two wings of the diaper on both the left and right side, and stick the stretchy fastening tape found on each wing onto the front of the diaper.
It's easy to overlook, but the leg cuffs, or ruffles on the edge of the diaper should be pulled out. Make sure to run your finger around these edges to make sure they are pulled out. This helps lock everything in, so there isn't leakage.
They're easy to put on, convenient to use, and do their job pretty darn well. But, the act of merely discarding plastic-wrapped, feces-filled diapers into the trash poses health hazards. You should always dump the feces into the toilet before disposing of a diaper (1).
Nappies need changing after every poo. You don't need to change your baby's nappy after every wee – rather, change the nappy just before or after a feed (but keep an eye out for nappy rash or skin irritation). There's no need to wake your baby at night for a nappy change.
Avoid the Dreaded Diaper Blowout
In many cases blowouts happen because of the wrong size diaper or diapers that aren't fully snug on the baby. It can be hard to ensure a good diaper fit when changing a wriggly baby! Diaper blowouts will happen, so always carry a spare change of clothes for your baby.

A properly fitting diaper should come just slightly below your little one's belly button. If it's fitting a little more like a low rise, it's time to move on up!
To see what a sufficiently wet diaper is like, pour 3 tablespoons (45 mL) of water into a clean diaper (if baby wets more often, then the amount of urine per diaper may be less). Urine should be pale and mild smelling. DIRTY DIAPERS: 3 – 4+ dirty diapers per day (after day 4).
You do not want the diaper to cover the cord area as air helps the wound heal and dry, allowing it to fall off. It is important to keep the belly button dry and free from urine and fecal matter.
The most common cause of leakage is fitting your baby with the wrong diaper size. So start by checking if the diaper size is right for your baby. Note also that the amount of pee increases as your baby grows. By the time your baby is 12 months old, the amount of pee discharged in a day will be twice that of a newborn.
By age four years, most children are reliably dry in the day. It's normal for night-time potty training to take longer. Most children learn how to stay dry at night when they are between three and five years old.
Most children will complete toilet training and be ready to stop using diapers between 18 and 30 months of age,1 but this certainly isn't the case for all kids. Some children are not fully out of diapers until after the age of 4.

You'll still want to make sure the diaper is fitting snugly around your little one's waist and through the legs, but a size up from your baby's daytime diaper size will give your overnight an extra boost when it comes to absorbency and ensuring maximum dryness.
