Tardigrades belong to an elite category of animals known as extremophiles, or critters that can survive environments that most others can't. For instance, tardigrades can go up to 30 years without food or water.
Camels can survive up to 15 days without water. One of the reasons that they can survive that long is because of their humps. They store fat in their humps (not water) and can use this to help them go longer without water.
The kangaroo rat of Western-North American desert can live without drinking water throughout its life. Its body synthesises enough water required for all its water needs in the process of digestion.
To date, there's only one species that has been called 'biologically immortal': the jellyfish Turritopsis dohrnii. These small, transparent animals hang out in oceans around the world and can turn back time by reverting to an earlier stage of their life cycle.
All living things, from tiny cyanobacteria to giant blue whales , need water to survive. Without water, life as we know it would not exist.
But the bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus show the same reaction in both situations. This indicates that bullfrogs do not sleep. Lithobates catesbeianus is an animal that cannot sleep.
Flatworms, nematodes, and cnidarians (jellyfish, sea anemones, and corals) do not have a circulatory system and thus do not have blood. Their body cavity has no lining or fluid within it.
Bullfrogs… No rest for the Bullfrog. The bullfrog was chosen as an animal that doesn't sleep because when tested for responsiveness by being shocked, it had the same reaction whether awake or resting.
A tardigrade goes into cryptobiosis, also known as a lowered metabolism. Their metabolism lowers to 0.01% of their normal rate and their water content can also drop to 1%. This makes them able to go without food for more than 30 years.
Giant tortoise
Its life span is often more than 100 years. Scientists credit a slow metabolism and a heart that beats at less than half the speed than that of humans.
Tiny and tough
For instance, tardigrades can go up to 30 years without food or water. They can also live at temperatures as cold as absolute zero or above boiling, at pressures six times that of the ocean's deepest trenches, and in the vacuum of space.
What kills tardigrades? Research shows that tardigrades can be killed by exposure to hot water for an extended period of time. One study showed that one hour of exposure to water at 82.7 °C (180.9 °F) can kill a tardigrade in its “tun” state, where it goes into suspended animation and becomes hard to destroy.
However, if a kangaroo rat drinks water, the necessary bodily liquids and vitamins are flushed out, and it dies as a result of dehydration.
In mammals, the Virginia opossum (commonly known simply as possums) is perhaps the best known example of defensive thanatosis. "Playing possum" is an idiomatic phrase which means "pretending to be dead". It comes from a characteristic of the Virginia opossum, which is famous for pretending to be dead when threatened.
The Sign Eviota, Eviota sigillata, a tiny coral reef fish, completes its entire life cycle within an eight week period. This species has the shortest lifespan of any vertebrate.
Coelacanths, first swam in the ocean about 400 million years ago and were believed to be extinct until one was caught off South Africa in 1938.
But the loudest is the sperm whale. It makes a series of clicking noises that can reach as high as 230 db making it the loudest animal in the world. The click lasts for only 15 to 30 milliseconds and can stay audible to a sperm whale as much as 10 miles away.
Snails need moisture to survive; so if the weather is not cooperating, they can actually sleep up to three years. It has been reported that depending on geography, snails can shift into hibernation (which occurs in the winter), or estivation (also known as 'summer sleep'), helping to escape warm climates.
08/11Crocodiles
You will be surprised to know that crocodiles, as one of the oldest reptiles of the planet can go for a few months without food, and in extreme cases, they can go up to three years without food. They save energy by moving slow and at times by being motionless too.
How Long Can a Normal Person Survive Without Water. The body requires a lot of water to maintain an internal temperature balance and keep cells alive. In general, a person can survive for about three days without water.
