Brisbane has been renowned for being Australia's fastest-growing city, recording an annual population growth rate of 1.8% over the last five years, outpacing both Sydney (1.4%) and Melbourne (1.5%).
Queensland had the fastest growing population over the year to March 2022, followed by Western Australia and South Australia. Annual population growth in New South Wales and Victoria increased from the previous quarter, while growth in the Northern Territory was slow but positive.
In 2050, Melbourne would be expected to reach 8.5 million while Sydney's population would have hit 8.3 million under the medium-growth model.
Population growth remains one of the single greatest drivers of property demand, and the ACT is booming. Canberra's population topped 420,000 in 2018 and is growing at the second-fastest rate nationally at around 2.2%, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, and is expected to hit 500,000 within a decade.

Victoria leads the economic rankings, closely followed by the ACT and Tasmania, with Queensland not far behind in fourth position, with little separating the top four positions.
As a result, six of the seven largest economies in the world are projected to be emerging economies in 2050 led by China (1st), India (2nd) and Indonesia (4th) The US could be down to third place in the global GDP rankings while the EU27's share of world GDP could fall below 10% by 2050.
