Cysticercosis is an infection caused by the larvae of the parasite Taenia solium. This infection occurs after a person swallows tapeworm eggs. The larvae get into tissues such as muscle and brain, and form cysts there (these are called cysticerci).
This is the parasite Trichinella spiralis in human muscle tissue. The parasite is transmitted by eating undercooked meats, especially pork. The cysts hatch in the intestines and produce large numbers of larvae that migrate into muscle tissue. The cysts may cause muscle pain and swelling in the face and around the eyes.
A blood test typically is enough to make a diagnosis. But your provider might also recommend a muscle biopsy. A small piece of muscle is removed and examined under a microscope to look for roundworm (trichinella) larvae.
Adult Trichinella spp. reside in the intestinal tract of the vertebrate host; larvae can be found encapsulated in muscle tissue. Fungal myositis is rare and usually occurs among immunocompromised hosts. Parasitic myositis is most commonly a result of trichinosis or cystericercosis, but other protozoa or helminths may be involved. A parasitic cause of myositis is suggested by the travel history and presence of eosinophilia.
Once the larvae have become established in skeletal muscle cells, usually by 3 to 4 weeks post infection, treatment may not completely eliminate the infection and associated symptoms. Treatment with either mebendazole or albendazole is recommended.
Myositis (my-o-SY-tis) is a rare type of autoimmune disease that inflames and weakens muscle fibers. Autoimmune diseases occur when the body's own immune system attacks itself. In the case of myositis, the immune system attacks healthy muscle tissue, which results in inflammation, swelling, pain, and eventual weakness.
Myositis is the name for a group of rare conditions. The main symptoms are weak, painful or aching muscles. This usually gets worse, slowly over time. You may also trip or fall a lot, and be very tired after walking or standing. If you have any of these symptoms you should see a GP.
Arthropods are the most commonly encountered parasites in the skin and subcutaneous tissues and include Sarcoptes scabei, Demodex species, Tunga penetrans, and myiasis-causing fly larvae. Protozoal parasites such as Leishmania may also be common in some settings.

Endoscopy/Colonoscopy
Endoscopy is used to find parasites that cause diarrhea, loose or watery stools, cramping, flatulence (gas) and other abdominal illness. This test is used when stool exams do not reveal the cause of your diarrhea.
Parasites can get into joints and eat the calcium lining of bones thus resulting in arthritic tendencies. They can get in the muscles and cause pain. They can also eat the protein coatings of nerves causing disruption of nerve signals from the brain.

Examples of parasitic infections
The most common ones found in North America include Giardia infections (through contaminated water) and toxoplasmosis (spread by cats). Others include: E. vermicularis, or pinworm.
Young roundworms can move through a person's skin and eventually into the bloodstream to the lungs and airways. They then move up to the throat, where they are swallowed into the stomach.

Pyomyositis (sometimes called tropical pyomyositis) is a rare and treatable bacterial infection that affects skeletal muscles (the muscles you use to move). Pyomyositis usually results in an abscess (a swollen area that contains pus) that forms in your muscle.
Muscular dystrophy (MD) refers to a group of more than 30 genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles used during voluntary movement. These disorders vary in age of onset, severity, and pattern of affected muscles.
Muscle biopsy is often done and is the most conclusive way to diagnose autoimmune myositis, especially when the diagnosis is not clear. Muscle biopsy is not usually necessary when people have characteristic skin changes of dermatomyositis.
